Chapter 14 - The Last Time Janice Called It Love

Janice came to Claire’s house alone.

No pearls.

No camel coat.

No polished audience.

Claire almost didn’t recognize how ordinary she looked.

Evan sat at the far end of the living room.

Claire held Harper on the couch.

Janice looked at her granddaughter but didn’t approach.

Claire asked the question.

“Why?”

Janice inhaled slowly.

“You were changing him.”

Claire shook her head.

“Try again.”

Janice looked at Evan.

“You stopped coming by.”

“Because I got married,” he said.

“You stopped needing me.”

Claire watched something fragile move across Janice’s face.

There was the wound beneath the control.

It did not make what she had done acceptable.

But it made it human.

Janice continued.

“When Harper came, I thought everything would come back together. Sunday dinners. Holidays. A reason for you to stay close.”

Claire said, “So when I wanted space—”

“I thought you were taking them.”

“They aren’t possessions.”

“I know that.”

“No,” Claire said. “You know it now.”

Janice flinched.

Evan asked, “Did you put those pieces near the monitor?”

Janice looked down.

A long silence followed.

Then:

“I discovered accidentally that my bracelet affected it.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Janice continued.

“The first time, Harper kicked the blanket against the sensor. The alarm went off.”

“And after that?”

Janice stared at her hands.

“I repeated it.”

Evan closed his eyes.

“How many times?”

“I don’t know.”

“You know.”

“Five.”

Claire felt something settle inside her.

Not satisfaction.

Certainty.

Janice began crying.

“I never believed she was in danger.”

“But you knew I believed she was.”

“Yes.”

“And you let your family laugh at me.”

Janice whispered, “Yes.”

Claire looked at Harper.

Then back at Janice.

“You don’t get unsupervised access to her.”

Janice nodded.

“I understand.”

“No. You accept it. Understanding comes later.”

Janice wiped her face.

“Will I ever get her back?”

Claire’s answer was immediate.

“She was never yours.”

Janice left without touching Harper.

The front door closed.

And for the first time, nobody followed her.
