Chapter 8 - THE OFFER AT THE HOSPITAL

Three weeks before trial, Claudia asked to meet Sarah privately.
Her attorney claimed she was dying.
She was not.
She had high blood pressure and had experienced chest pain in county custody, but doctors expected a full recovery.
The request was another form of control.
Sarah initially refused.
Then Claudia offered the location of additional financial records in exchange for the meeting.
We met in a secure hospital conference room with attorneys and officers present.
Claudia entered in a wheelchair even though her medical report said she could walk.
She looked at Sarah.
“You appear tired.”
Sarah sat across from her.
“What records?”
“No hello?”
“No.”
Claudia smiled faintly.
“You always were cold.”
I felt Sarah tense beside me.
She placed both feet firmly on the floor.
“The records.”
Claudia explained that another ledger was hidden inside a safe-deposit box under Thomas’s name. It contained payments to judges, police officials, and contractors.
“What do you want?” Sarah asked.
Claudia leaned forward.
“Your testimony can save me.”
“No.”
“You can say Jared controlled the company.”
“You controlled Jared.”
“I protected my son.”
“You trained him to believe consequences were something other people suffered.”
Claudia’s eyes hardened.
“He was born strong. You and Michael were always weak.”
Sarah stared at her mother.
“Lily was strong enough to defend me.”
“She was disrespectful.”
“She was a child.”
“She embarrassed this family.”
Sarah’s voice remained calm.
“No. She exposed it.”
Claudia changed tactics.
“If I am convicted, the trust will be frozen. Lily will lose millions.”
“We don’t want your money.”
“Everyone wants money.”
“That is what you told yourself so you never had to understand love.”
For the first time, Claudia looked genuinely wounded.
Sarah continued.
“Dad loved us, and you used his fear against him. Michael wanted your approval, and you made him carry bribes. Jared wanted power, and you fed him people to hurt.”
“What about you?”
“I wanted a mother.”
Claudia looked away.
Sarah’s voice broke slightly.
“You made me earn affection by accepting abuse. I’m not teaching my daughter to do the same.”
Claudia returned her attention to me.
“Ryan, surely you understand that family assets should remain protected.”
I almost laughed.
“You watched your son strike my daughter and smiled.”
“She will recover.”
“That is not the standard.”
Sarah stood.
“Give the safe-deposit information to the prosecutor or keep it. I will not lie for you.”
Claudia grabbed her wrist.
An officer moved immediately.
Sarah looked down at her mother’s hand.
Claudia released her.
“You will regret abandoning me.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“You abandoned me when I was ten.”
We left without accepting the deal.
The next morning, Claudia’s attorney surrendered the safe-deposit key.
The records connected four elected officials and two senior police officers to Jared’s bribery network.
They also proved Claudia had paid the former sheriff to classify Thomas’s death as an accident.

The hidden truth was no longer only a family story.
It was the largest public-corruption case the county had seen in decades.
