Chapter 2 - THE MEN HE COULDN’T BUY

Jared reached for my phone.

I stepped back with Lily in my arms.

“Give me that recording.”

“No.”

His face darkened.

“You think you can walk into my mother’s house and threaten me?”

“You struck my daughter.”

“She was disrespectful.”

“She is ten.”

Sarah moved beside me and placed one hand on Lily’s back.

It was a small movement, but Claudia reacted as if Sarah had declared war.

“Sit down,” Claudia ordered.

Sarah flinched.

Then she remained standing.

The front door opened without anyone answering it.

Alex Ramirez entered first, wearing a dark state police jacket. Two uniformed troopers followed him, along with paramedics carrying medical bags.

Jared laughed too loudly.

“This is ridiculous. Alex, tell your people to leave. You know me.”

Alex did not shake his hand.

“I know who you are.”

Claudia stepped forward.

“My son sits on the mayor’s economic council.”

“That does not authorize him to assault children.”

“He did not assault anyone.”

Alex looked at Lily.

“Did someone hit you?”

She buried her face against me.

Sarah answered quietly.

“My brother did.”

Jared turned on her.

“Watch yourself.”

One of the troopers moved between them.

Alex held out his hand to me.

“The phone.”

I gave it to him.

He listened through headphones while the paramedics examined Lily. The room remained silent except for Claudia’s antique clock and Lily’s uneven breathing.

The recording played Jared’s insult.

The slap.

The chair hitting the floor.

Then Claudia’s voice.

That’s what brats deserve.

Alex removed the headphones.

“Jared Collins, turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Claudia laughed.

“You cannot be serious.”

Jared’s confidence returned for half a second.

“My attorney will have me home before you finish the paperwork.”

“That’s possible,” Alex said. “But you’re still leaving in handcuffs.”

When the trooper reached for him, Jared shoved the man’s arm away.

The room erupted.

A chair overturned. Claudia screamed. Sarah pulled Lily closer while I shielded both of them.

The troopers forced Jared against the wall and cuffed him.

He twisted toward me.

“You think this ends well for you?”

Alex stepped between us.

“It gets worse if you threaten a witness.”

Claudia grabbed Sarah’s sleeve.

“You did this to your brother.”

Sarah looked down at her mother’s hand.

Then she removed it slowly.

“No. Jared did this to himself.”

The paramedics recommended taking Lily to the hospital because she had struck her head.

I carried her toward the door.

Claudia called after us.

“If you leave with those police, none of you are welcome back.”

I turned.

“You just described the best possible outcome.”

As we stepped outside, I noticed three unmarked vehicles parked behind the patrol cars.

Men and women in plain clothes were gathering near the garage and side entrance.

They were not paramedics.

They carried evidence cases.

Jared saw them too.

His face lost what little color remained.

He looked at Alex.

“What are they doing here?”

Alex’s answer was calm.

“Executing a search warrant.”

May you like

Claudia stopped breathing.

The arrest for assault was only the beginning.
