Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO BUILT THE MONSTER

Jared was arrested at a private airfield outside Columbus while attempting to board a chartered plane.

He carried seventy thousand dollars in cash and a passport registered under another name.

The charges now included child assault, witness intimidation, bribery, fraud, and conspiracy connected to Thomas’s death.

Claudia was arrested the same afternoon.

She did not cry.

She demanded that officers allow her to change clothes before photographers saw her.

At the preliminary hearing, her attorney portrayed her as an elderly widow victimized by unstable children.

Sarah sat beside me in the courtroom.

Lily remained home with my sister.

When Claudia entered wearing a pale gray suit, she looked directly at Sarah and smiled.

It was the same small smile she gave after Jared struck Lily.

The prosecutor played the dinner recording.

Jared’s slap cracked through the courtroom speakers.

Then Claudia’s voice followed.

That’s what brats deserve.

Several people in the gallery flinched.

Claudia’s attorney argued that the statement was taken out of context.

The prosecutor asked what context would make celebrating violence against a child appropriate.

He had no answer.

Michael testified first.

He described the bribes, threats, and forged documents.

Then Sarah was called.

She walked to the witness stand with both hands trembling.

The prosecutor asked when Jared’s violence began.

Sarah looked toward Claudia.

“When we were children.”

“How old were you the first time he struck you?”

“Ten.”

My breath caught.

Sarah had never told me that detail.

“What happened?”

“My mother called me ungrateful during dinner. I told her to stop yelling at my father. Jared slapped me and knocked me from my chair.”

The courtroom became silent.

The same age.

The same setting.

The same punishment for defending someone she loved.

The prosecutor asked what Claudia did.

Sarah’s voice became barely audible.

“She smiled and said, ‘That’s what brats deserve.’”

The words changed the meaning of everything I had seen at the dinner.

Sarah’s frozen face.

Her locked hands.

Her inability to move when Lily fell.

She had not merely remembered childhood abuse.

For one terrible second, she had watched her own past happen to her daughter.

Claudia leaned toward her attorney, but he stopped her from speaking.

Sarah continued.

“My mother taught Jared that hurting us made him strong. Every time he frightened someone, she rewarded him. Every time we told the truth, she punished us.”

The defense attorney stood.

“Mrs. Walker, are you blaming your elderly mother for the actions of a grown man?”

“No.”

Sarah looked at Jared.

“He is responsible for every person he hurt.”

Then she turned toward Claudia.

“And she is responsible for every time she protected him and sacrificed someone else.”

Claudia’s composure cracked.

“You ungrateful little liar!”

The judge ordered her to remain silent.

She continued shouting.

“I gave you everything!”

Sarah did not flinch.

“You gave me fear and called it family.”

Claudia was removed from the courtroom.

For the first time in Sarah’s life, her mother was the one forced to leave while Sarah remained seated.

The judge denied bail for both Claudia and Jared.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.

Sarah did not stop.

She took my hand and walked through them.

She had spent thirty-eight years waiting for permission to escape her mother’s table.

She no longer needed it.
