Chapter 8 - Claire Opens the Result Herself

Claire insisted on opening the result without Harold present.
Ethan sat beside her.
Olivia slept upstairs.
The genetic counselor remained on the video call while Claire clicked the secure file.
Probability of parentage: greater than 99.99 percent.
Harold Mercer was Claire’s biological father.
Claire read the sentence twice.
Then closed the laptop.
Ethan reached for her.
She stood before he could touch her.
“I need a minute.”
He let her have one.
She walked to the sink and stared into the backyard.
There was no question anymore.
Harold was Olivia’s biological maternal grandfather.
Ethan was Olivia’s biological father.
Ethan and Claire shared no biological parent.
There was no genetic incest between them.
But their family structure had been built around secrets that both Harold and Diane had protected for decades.
Claire turned around.
“What about Diane?”
Ethan knew what she meant.
His mother’s test.
Diane had still refused the accredited comparison.
Ethan called her.
“This is finished, Mom. Either you test voluntarily or I stop pretending your version matters.”
Diane came the next morning.
Her sample confirmed what she had already admitted.
Harold was excluded as Ethan’s biological father.
Further testing with stored family reference material was not possible because Michael Mercer had been cremated thirty-two years earlier.
But Diane’s account, old medical records and the original timeline all pointed toward Michael.
It would never be as certain as Claire’s result.
Ethan had to live with that.
Diane seemed almost relieved.
Then Claire asked the question nobody had raised.
“Why did you order the first test?”
Diane’s expression hardened again.
“Because Olivia didn’t look like Ethan.”
“That’s not enough.”
“It was enough for me.”
Claire shook her head.
“You had spent thirty-eight years hiding the fact Ethan wasn’t Harold’s biological son. Why would you voluntarily send Harold’s DNA to a lab?”
Harold looked sharply at his wife.
Ethan did too.
Diane had risked exposing herself.
That made no sense if proving Claire unfaithful had been her only purpose.
Diane stood.
“We’re done.”
Claire blocked neither the door nor her path.
She only said, “You weren’t trying to prove I cheated.”
Diane stopped.
“You were looking for something else.”
The grandmother turned.
For the first time, Claire saw not cruelty in her face.
May you like
Fear.
Diane had ordered the test because she already suspected Olivia might connect Harold to a secret she had spent years refusing to name.
