Chapter 10 - The Secret Harold Had Kept From Both Women

Harold still had one lie left.

Claire discovered it because of a date.

Rebecca had told Susan she informed Harold of the pregnancy before leaving Chicago.

Harold claimed Rebecca told him the baby was another man’s.

But when Susan found Rebecca’s old employment calendar among family records Claire had already inherited, the sequence did not fit.

Rebecca left her job three weeks before she met Thomas.

She could not have truthfully claimed Thomas was the father when she spoke to Harold.

Claire brought the calendar to Harold.

No accusation.

Just dates.

Harold read them.

Then he sat down heavily.

Diane watched from the opposite end of the living room.

“You lied again,” Claire said.

Harold nodded.

Rebecca had not told him another man was the father.

She had told him the child was his.

She also told him she would raise the baby without him unless he was willing to leave Diane and publicly acknowledge the child.

Harold refused.

Rebecca left.

Years later she married Thomas, who legally became Claire’s father after her birth and raised her without conditions.

Harold did not lose Claire through confusion.

He chose not to claim her.

Then came the second part.

“Rebecca contacted me when Claire was twenty-one.”

Claire stared.

“You said you didn’t speak again until I was twenty-five.”

Harold nodded.

Rebecca had been undergoing testing after recurrent health problems. Doctors believed Claire might someday benefit from knowing more of her biological family medical history.

Rebecca asked Harold for that history.

He provided it.

Nothing more.

“She asked if I wanted to meet you.”

Claire could barely speak.

“And?”

“I said no.”

Ethan looked at the man who had raised him.

“Why?”

Harold’s face folded under the weight of the answer.

“Because by then you were my son. Diane was my wife. I had spent twenty years living one life.”

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“So I was inconvenient.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was brutal.

Diane closed her eyes.

Harold continued.

“Then Ethan brought you home four years later.”

That was the major truth.

Harold had not merely discovered Claire’s identity after Ethan began dating her.

He had already known Claire was his daughter.

He recognized her name the first time Ethan mentioned her.

He knew exactly who she was before that Thanksgiving dinner.

And he still invited her into the house, sat across from her, and allowed everyone else to live inside a truth only he possessed.

Claire stood.

“You didn’t protect a family.”

May you like

Harold looked up.

“You protected your place in it.”
