Chapter 12 - Four Adults and One Baby

The confrontation happened because Claire demanded it.
No holiday dinner.
No family celebration.
No audience.
Just Harold, Diane, Ethan and Claire in the same living room where the first report had landed.
Olivia slept upstairs in a portable crib.
Claire spoke first.
“I want one conversation where nobody protects their reputation.”
Diane sat rigidly.
Harold nodded.
Ethan remained standing.
Claire looked at Diane.
“You treated me like I was dirty because your husband had betrayed you before I was born.”
Diane swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You questioned my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You questioned my child.”
Diane’s voice weakened.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you confront Harold?”
“Because if I was wrong, I destroyed my marriage.”
“And if you were right?”
Diane stared at the floor.
“I destroyed it anyway.”
Claire turned to Harold.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“Before Ethan brought me here.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Ethan wasn’t biologically yours.”
“Yes.”
“So you knew we weren’t biologically related.”
“Yes.”
“And that was enough for you?”
Harold’s eyes watered.
“I convinced myself it was.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“No.”
Claire finally sat.
“What did you actually want?”
Harold took time before answering.
“To keep Ethan.”
Ethan’s face changed.
Harold continued.
“To keep Diane. To keep the life I’d built. And later… to have you near me without paying for the right to call you my daughter.”
Claire looked away.
That answer hurt because it was probably the first complete one he had ever given.
Diane began crying quietly.
Ethan turned toward her.
“And you?”
She looked up.
“What were you protecting?”
Diane answered, “The belief that Harold chose me.”
Harold flinched.
Diane wiped her face.
“If Claire was his daughter, then Rebecca wasn’t just an affair. There was a permanent piece of him walking around.”
Claire said, “I’m not a piece of him.”
“I know.”
“No. You’re learning.”
Diane nodded.
Ethan finally spoke.
“My daughter doesn’t grow up carrying this.”
Harold looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
“We tell her the truth when she’s old enough to understand it.”
Diane immediately said, “Ethan—”
“No.”

His voice stopped her.
“No more inherited secrets.”
