Chapter 6 - Why Her Birthday Mattered to Him

By Saturday evening, Demi understood why the timing mattered.

Philip’s phone buzzed during dinner, and when he went to the balcony to answer, he left it faceup on the counter. Demi did not search his messages. She only glanced at the lock-screen preview before looking away.

Need Monday confirmation or I lose the bridge loan.

She did not know the sender. She did not need to.

Sunday brought more clues.

Glenda insisted on inviting herself over Monday morning “to make Philip a proper breakfast before work.” That alone was strange. Glenda usually preferred dramatic lunch visits and late afternoon drop-ins, when she could comment on housekeeping.

Philip became unusually soft.

He brought Demi a small bouquet from Wegmans, kissed her forehead, and asked whether she had “big plans” for her birthday. His tone had the careful politeness of someone approaching a locked door.

Demi said she intended to sleep late.

Glenda arrived the next morning before eight.

Demi heard their voices in the hallway while she remained in bed pretending sleep.

“He’ll need her in a better mood,” Glenda said.

Philip answered too quietly for every word to carry, but she caught enough.

…just sign the renovation papers… just once… then we fix everything.

There were no renovation papers.

There was a fraudulent loan application and a man running out of time.

Naomi told Demi to keep the folder near her and leave the apartment the moment she could do so safely. But she also said something else.

“If they try to pressure you face-to-face, do not argue from memory. Hold the papers. Make them speak in front of each other.”

That was why the folder stayed in the bedside drawer.

That was why Demi did not scream when the pot struck the headboard.

She had already crossed the point of surprise.

When she opened the green folder in front of them, she wasn’t improvising courage.

She was finally using it.

And when Philip saw the last page, what panicked him was not the deed.

It was the proof that the bank already knew the signature was fake and that someone from the fraud unit had scheduled a formal call with Naomi for 10:00 a.m.

His plan was not merely discovered.

It was interrupted.
