Chapter 2 - The Call She Had Prepared

Naomi did not sound surprised.

That was the part Philip understood first.

Demi had not dialed a lawyer in panic.

She had dialed a lawyer already waiting.

“Demi,” Naomi said evenly, “are you safe enough to speak freely?”

Philip stopped moving.

Glenda, suddenly breathless, looked from the phone to the green folder and back again. The pot still lay on the floor beside the bed like proof none of them could talk around.

“Yes,” Demi said. “They’re both here.”

“Good. Put me on speaker and do not end the call. I’m recording notes.”

Philip found his voice. “You can’t record us without—”

Naomi cut through him. “Mr. Mercer, I’m her attorney. You may stop speaking any time you like.”

The silence that followed felt different from the others this family had built around her. It did not belong to them.

Demi said, “Glenda threw the pot at my head. It hit the headboard. She grabbed my wrist. Philip attempted to take the folder from me.”

Naomi asked for the date, the time, and whether anyone besides the three of them was present in the apartment.

“No.”

“Did anyone touch the folder besides you?”

“Philip tried to.”

Naomi’s tone remained calm. “Good. Keep it in your possession. Do not surrender it.”

Philip stared at Demi as if he could force an answer from her face.

“What is on that page?”

Demi finally looked at him.

“The thing you thought I’d never see.”

Glenda took one step back.

“Philip,” she said quietly, “maybe we should speak privately.”

That did it.

Demi laughed once—not loudly, not hysterically, but with the kind of sharp disbelief that comes when a lie finally collapses under its own weight.

“No,” she said. “You’ve spoken privately for long enough.”

Naomi instructed Demi to photograph the dented headboard, the pot, and the marks on her wrist. She also told her to call building security and the police after the call ended, then leave the apartment with an escort if possible.

“This is no longer only a domestic incident,” Naomi said. “It may also involve an attempted financial crime.”

Philip’s jaw tightened.

“You’re blowing this out of proportion.”

Naomi answered for Demi.

“Mr. Mercer, if the page in that folder is what I believe it is, the proportion is already set.”

May you like

Demi held the folder tighter.

Only then did Philip seem to understand that the birthday morning had gone somewhere he could no longer direct.
