Chapter 1 - The Pot That Missed Her

Glenda Mercer swung the cast-iron pot so hard that it split the silence before it hit the headboard.

The metal crashed inches from Demi’s temple, leaving a deep dent in the carved wood behind her bed. Demi jerked back on instinct, one hand flying to her ear, the other gripping the white satin sheet across her lap.

“I don’t care if it’s your birthday—get up and cook for my son!”

For one stunned second, the only sound in the bright Rochester bedroom was the ring of metal against wood.

Then Philip appeared in the doorway, dark hair damp from the shower, dress shirt half-buttoned, tie loose around his neck.

He did not rush to his wife.

He looked first at his mother.

Glenda seized Demi by the wrist and yanked her toward the edge of the bed.

“If he wanted a lazy wife,” she snapped, “he would’ve married a dog.”

Demi felt the burn in her cheek where Glenda’s nails scraped her skin. She had spent almost two years learning how humiliation arrived in that family—not always through shouting, sometimes through silence, correction, little public degradations that left no visible bruise.

This one would leave marks.

She ripped her wrist free, rose in one quick motion, shoved the bedside table aside with her knee, and pulled a green folder from the drawer beneath it.

Philip took one step forward.

“Demi, put that down and stop acting crazy in front of my mother.”

He reached for it.

She slapped his hand away so sharply the sound cracked through the room. Then she forced him back with her shoulder and opened the folder with cold, deliberate care.

The deed lay on top.

Beneath it sat a notarized acknowledgment page bearing Philip’s own signature.

Demi lifted her phone, hit the number already waiting on screen, and put the call on speaker.

“You just attacked the woman who paid for this home,” she said, without looking away from either of them. “Ask your mother what secret she already knew.”

For the first time that morning, Glenda’s expression flickered.

Philip’s eyes dropped to the deed.

Then he saw one more page tucked behind the acknowledgment—something he clearly had not expected.

His face changed.

He lunged.

Demi pulled the folder back against her chest just as the call connected and a woman’s calm voice filled the bedroom.

“Naomi Keller speaking.”
