CHAPTER 3 — The Calls That Never Came

Michael did not confront Ashley in the SUV.

That was the first smart thing he had done in a year.

He drove her to an expensive boutique downtown while she talked too loudly about dinner reservations, wedding invitations, and how “pathetic” Emily had looked.

Michael said almost nothing.

At 2:31 p.m., he drove straight to his office, locked the door, and called David Ross, the private investigator he trusted with the problems money could not solve cleanly.

“I need everything on Emily,” Michael said.

David paused.

“Everything?”

“Where she’s been. How she survived. The babies. The divorce file. The bank records. The hotel photos. The necklace. All of it.”

Another pause.

Then David said, “Are you sure you want to open that door?”

Michael stared at the city through the glass wall of his office.

“I should never have shut it.”

By evening, David called back.

His voice was different.

Careful.

“Michael, eleven months ago, Emily checked into a county hospital while pregnant. She listed you as her emergency contact.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“No one called me.”

“They did.”

The room went cold.

David continued, “Your private office line. Your old home number. Your personal assistant. There were three call logs.”

Michael gripped the edge of his desk.

“I never got them.”

“I know,” David said. “Someone paid a clerk to mark the contact attempts as invalid.”

Michael could barely breathe.

“Who?”

“I’m sending you the receipt now.”

The email arrived.

Michael opened the scanned image.

A payment record.

A signature line.

Ashley Monroe.

His fiancée.

The woman sitting in Emily’s chair.

The woman wearing his ring.

The woman who had smiled on the roadside while two babies looked at him with his own eyes.

Michael stood so fast his chair rolled backward.

For the first time, he understood.

Emily had not vanished.

She had been erased.
