"My millionaire ex-husband pulled over to mock me on the roadside, then saw the twins in my arms had his eyes
CHAPTER 1 — The Roadside
Michael Hayes saw his ex-wife on the side of a country road while driving his fiancée home.
At first, he almost did not recognize her.
Emily stood near the edge of the gravel shoulder beneath the soft summer daylight, holding two bundled babies close against her chest. A simple paper grocery bag rested near her feet. Her hair was tied back, her face tired, her clothes plain and dusted from the road.
She looked nothing like the woman he had once loved inside chandeliered rooms and charity galas.
But his heart knew her before his mind accepted it.
Ashley leaned forward from the passenger seat of the dark SUV.
“Isn’t that Emily?”
Michael’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.
The SUV slowed.
Then stopped.
Emily looked up.
For one long second, neither of them spoke.
The wind moved through the green fields behind her. One of the babies shifted slightly beneath the blanket, calm and quiet, as if the entire world had not just opened beneath Michael’s feet.
Ashley’s smile sharpened.
“Well,” she said, “this is awkward.”
Emily did not look at her.
She looked only at Michael.
There was no anger in her eyes.
That was what hurt him most.
There was only exhaustion.
And something like goodbye.
Michael lowered the window.
His voice barely worked.
“Emily?”
She adjusted one baby’s blanket with gentle hands.
The movement was careful.
Protective.
Familiar.

The baby opened their eyes.
Pale blue.
Michael’s eyes.
His breath caught.
Emily took one quiet step back.
“I tried to tell you,” she said.
Ashley’s smile disappeared.
Michael opened the car door slowly, as if sudden movement might shatter the moment.
“What did I miss?” he whispered.
Emily looked down at the twins.
May you like
Then back at him.
“Everything.”
