Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2 — The Lie He Believed

One year earlier, Michael had thrown Emily out of their home without letting her finish a sentence.

He could still see that night whenever he closed his eyes.

The marble foyer.

The rain against the windows.

Emily standing barefoot near the staircase, one hand pressed against her stomach, her face pale with terror.

On the glass table between them were bank transfer records, hotel photographs, and his mother’s missing diamond necklace.

All of it pointed to Emily.

All of it looked perfect.

Too perfect.

But Michael had been too angry to see that then.

Ashley had stood beside him that night, soft-voiced and sympathetic.

“I’m sorry,” she had whispered. “I didn’t want you to find out this way.”

Emily had shaken her head.

“Michael, she’s lying. Please. I didn’t move that money. I didn’t take the necklace. I need to tell you something.”

But pride had already closed his ears.

He was a millionaire used to control.

Used to clean answers.

Used to people obeying when he spoke.

And the pain of believing Emily had betrayed him made him cruel.

“Get her out,” he told security.

Emily’s face broke.

“Michael, I’m pregnant.”

He heard the words.

But Ashley laughed softly.

“Oh, Emily,” she said. “Don’t.”

Michael looked at his wife.

Then at the supposed evidence.

Then at the necklace found in her drawer.

He made the worst decision of his life.

“I said get her out.”

Emily left with nothing but a coat, a phone, and a grief so quiet it haunted the walls after she was gone.

The divorce was fast.

His attorneys were merciless.

Ashley stayed close.

Comforting him.

Guiding him.

Replacing Emily piece by piece until Michael no longer noticed when she sat in the chair his wife used to sit in.

But on that roadside, looking at the twins in Emily’s arms, the entire lie began to crack.

Because those children were not a rumor.

Not a trick.

Not a desperate story.

May you like

They were real.

And they looked like him.
