Chapter 9 - When Our Private Disaster Became a Real Case

The conflict spread because Grant made it spread.
He contacted Owen’s school and claimed I was allowing “an unstable former addict” back into Owen’s life without adequate safeguards.
Mr. Harris documented the concern.
Then he documented our actual safeguards.
Therapist.
Attorneys.
No unsupervised contact.
Owen’s consent.
Caleb’s treatment history and continued recovery support.
Grant’s complaint did not stop anything.
It did, however, create a written record showing how determined he was to control the narrative.
At work, things also became uncomfortable.
Grant and I had dozens of mutual friends through Bethesda’s small professional circles.
I refused to discuss details.
Grant was less restrained.
People began asking Natalie whether I had “gone back to my addict ex.”
I had not.
Caleb had a girlfriend in Richmond.
I was separating from my husband because of deception, not romantically returning to anyone.
But Grant’s version was easier to gossip about.
Then Melissa found something more serious.
The audit of my co-parenting account showed not only Grant’s device.
It showed a password reset requested from his office five years earlier.
The recovery email used was his.
For almost two years, I technically had not controlled the account at all.
I thought I did because messages were forwarded selectively.
That evidence strengthened my position.
Then it created a problem.
Grant’s lawyer produced emails where I had thanked Grant for “handling everything with Caleb.”
One message read:
I honestly don't want to know what he says anymore. Just deal with it.
I stared at my own words.
Grant had deceived me.
But I had also given him broad permission because I wanted relief.
Melissa was careful.
“This doesn't authorize impersonation.”
“I know.”
“But?”
“It explains how he got access.”
Exactly.
I could not build my future by pretending I had been powerless every step of the way.
I had been afraid.
Avoidant.
Too willing to outsource painful responsibilities.
That mattered.
Then Caleb called through the attorney-approved channel.
“I remembered something else about Grant.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“The day he picked me up during the relapse, he wasn't surprised where I was.”
“What do you mean?”
“I never told him which bar.”
I felt cold.
“Then how did he find you?”
May you like
Caleb looked at me through the screen.
“That’s what I started wondering too.”
