Chapter 5 - The Meeting Both Men Hid From Me

Caleb agreed to speak through our attorneys first.

That told me he had changed.

The old Caleb would have driven straight to Natalie’s house demanding answers.

This Caleb asked what made Owen comfortable.

We started with a video call between adults.

When his face appeared on my laptop, I barely recognized him.

Older.

Grayer.

Healthy.

He did not begin with an apology.

He began with the truth.

“Yes. I went to Grant’s office.”

“Why?”

“I thought he was blocking my messages.”

Five years earlier Caleb had completed nearly two years of sobriety.

His counselor encouraged him to try rebuilding supervised contact.

My account kept rejecting him.

So he searched Grant online and went to his office.

Grant told him I had moved on.

That Owen called Grant Dad.

That any renewed contact would destabilize me.

Caleb didn’t believe him.

Then Grant showed him something.

A printout.

An email supposedly written by me.

Caleb needs to understand that Owen finally has a stable father. If he loves his son at all, he’ll disappear.

I had never written it.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Caleb looked ashamed.

“Because part of me believed you could've written it.”

That hurt.

But it was reasonable.

Our marriage had ended badly.

“And then?”

“Grant offered me money.”

I stared at him.

“To disappear?”

“No.”

That answer surprised me.

“He offered to pay for another year of treatment and help me relocate to Richmond.”

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

“I know.”

Caleb leaned toward the camera.

“I refused.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

His eyes dropped.

“Because Grant knew about the relapse.”

My stomach tightened.

Caleb had relapsed once.

One weekend.

No arrest.

No contact with Owen.

But enough to terrify him.

Grant somehow knew.

“He told me if I tried to contact you, he’d send proof to your attorney and make sure I never got near Owen again.”

“Was the proof real?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, Grant’s motive looked almost defensible.

He had been protecting Owen from a father who had relapsed.

Except Caleb had returned to treatment immediately.

And Grant had continued blocking him for five more sober years.

I asked the obvious question.

“How did Grant know about the relapse?”

Caleb stared at me.

“That’s what I thought you already knew.”

May you like

He swallowed.

“Grant was there.”
