Chapter 4 - The Choice That Ended My Marriage Before I Said Divorce

I did not go back to the house alone.
Natalie came with me.
Grant was in the kitchen.
The broken suitcase had disappeared from the driveway.
Owen’s clothes were stacked neatly on a chair.
It was exactly the sort of cleanup Grant loved.
Remove the evidence.
Restore the surface.
“Where is Owen?” he asked.
“Safe.”
He looked at Natalie.
“This is between my wife and me.”
“No,” I said. “You made it about my son.”
I placed copies of the account records on the counter.
Grant glanced down.
His expression barely moved.
“You have no context.”
“Did you use my account?”
“I helped manage it. You asked me to.”
“Did you send messages pretending to be me?”
“You were falling apart every time Caleb contacted you.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“He was an addict.”
“He was in recovery.”
“So he claimed.”
I felt something inside me settle.
Until that moment, a small part of me wanted an explanation that would make our marriage salvageable.
Instead Grant sounded offended that I was questioning his authority to decide.
I took my wedding ring off.
His face finally changed.
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
“I’m taking Owen somewhere else while I figure this out.”
“This is my house too.”
“I know.”
Unlike Grant, I knew exactly whose name was on the deed.
Both of ours.
I had purchased the house two years before marrying him and refinanced after the wedding.
Grant had contributed significantly to renovations and the new mortgage.
There would be no dramatic ownership reversal.
Just lawyers, numbers, and consequences.
Real life.
He stepped closer.
“Rachel, you needed me.”
“I did.”
“You were terrified of Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“I handled what you couldn't.”
I looked at him.
“That does not make you me.”
The distinction hit him harder than shouting would have.
I packed three bags.
At the door, Grant said:
“If you bring Caleb back into Owen’s life, you’ll find out why I kept him away.”
I turned.
“What does that mean?”
Grant’s mouth tightened.
“Ask your ex what happened the night he came to my office.”
I had never known Caleb had been to Grant’s office.
“When?”
Grant gave me the date.
I remembered it immediately.
May you like
Because two days afterward, Caleb had supposedly sent the message saying he was giving up contact.
The timing was not a coincidence.
