Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T HERS

Maddie hired a family-law attorney before deciding whether she actually wanted a divorce.
Her attorney, Celia Ramos, gave her advice Maddie badly needed.
“Separate what is insulting from what is legally important.”
The pool incident mattered.
The financial deception mattered.
The marriage mattered.
But first Maddie needed to understand exactly what had been done in her name.
The title company cooperated because Maddie was the stated source of the $92,000.
They sent her the documents connected to the proposed funds.
One was a gift certification.
It stated that Madeleine Mercer was voluntarily giving $92,000 to Barbara Mercer with no expectation of repayment or ownership interest.
At the bottom was an electronic signature:
Madeleine Mercer.
Maddie had never signed it.
Her stomach tightened.
Celia told her not to call Bradley.
“Let the lender preserve its own records.”
Maddie notified the title company and lender in writing that the signature was disputed.
The transaction froze completely.
Then she studied the document more carefully.
The date was September 18.
Maddie had been in Denver that day producing a pharmaceutical conference.
Bradley knew because he had called her from Barbara’s kitchen complaining that she was “never around when family needed her.”
Maddie remembered another detail.
That night Bradley asked for the verification code sent to her phone because he said their shared streaming account had logged him out.
She had read him the six digits while directing stagehands through a ballroom load-out.
Maddie searched her texts.
The old code message was still there.
It had not come from a streaming service.
It had come from the document-signing platform.
Maddie felt physically ill.
The code.
His insistence that she miss the lender calls.
Barbara’s strange panic beside the pool.
Three details that had seemed unrelated now belonged together.
She called Celia.
“He used my verification code.”
May you like
Celia paused.
“Then we stop treating this as only a bad marriage.”
