Chapter 10 - THE MARRIAGE AFTER THE CLOSING
The explanation came from Ethan.
Not voluntarily.
The lender’s internal review had started, and Bradley was calling family members asking them to remember events “correctly.”
Ethan panicked.
He asked Maddie to meet him in a Panera near Schaumburg where nobody in the family usually went.
“Brad had a plan,” he said.
Maddie said nothing.
Ethan rubbed both palms over his jeans.
“He said once the duplex started making money, he’d finally have leverage.”
“Leverage for what?”
Ethan looked miserable.
“Leaving you.”
Maddie stared at him.
The coffee shop noise continued around them.
“Say that again.”
Bradley had been talking about divorce for nearly a year.
Not because he no longer loved Maddie.
At least that was not how he described it.
He said Maddie had “made him small.”
He complained that every house payment reminded him whose career mattered more.
He wanted the Lake Geneva property because it would give him income, housing for Barbara, work for Ethan and Cody, and an asset controlled entirely by the Mercer family.
Maddie’s money would launch it.
Maddie herself would own none of it.
Bradley had told Ethan that after one successful rental season he could separate from Maddie “without walking away with nothing.”
Suddenly the previous months rearranged themselves.
Bradley pushing Maddie to put in cash instead of financing.
Bradley insisting the LLC needed to stay “simple.”
Bradley discouraging her from joining lender calls.
His growing contempt whenever she mentioned household expenses.
His performance in front of his family.
The pool was not part of an elaborate scheme.
That mattered.
Bradley had not shoved Maddie into the water because he wanted her to discover everything.
He shoved her because alcohol, resentment, and an audience allowed the contempt he usually controlled to become physical.
But the reason the canceled transfer terrified him was now clear.
Maddie had not merely stopped an investment.
She had accidentally destroyed the financial independence Bradley planned to use to leave her after using her money to create it.
Ethan looked at her.
“He said once it closed, you couldn’t take it back.”
Maddie thought of Bradley calling her controlling.
