Chapter 5 - BARBARA’S MORTGAGE
Bradley stood in their kitchen holding his declined credit card as if Maddie had stolen something from him.
“My paycheck is no longer paying your personal card.”
“We’re married.”
“Exactly.”
Maddie turned the laptop around.
“What are these?”
Bradley looked at the MERCER PROP payments.
His expression barely changed.
“Mom’s house.”
“You told me her house was paid off.”
“It was.”
“Then why are we sending her money?”
Bradley sat down.
For once, the confidence disappeared.
Two years earlier, Barbara had opened a home-equity line to help Ethan and Cody start a boat-detailing business.
The cousins struggled.
Barbara struggled to cover the payments.
Bradley began helping her.
Except Bradley had not been helping her with his money.
The payments came through the credit card Maddie ultimately paid.
“Does she know?”
“Know what?”
“That I’ve been paying her debt.”
Bradley stared at the table.
Maddie understood.
“She thinks it’s your money.”
“Why does that matter?”
Maddie laughed once.
“Because Saturday night your mother spent three hours making jokes about me controlling you with money.”
Bradley stood.
“She didn’t know.”
“You let her.”
“You always have to make everything about who earns more.”
“I never told them.”
“You didn’t have to.”
There it was.
The humiliation underneath his humiliation of her.
Bradley had spent years accepting Maddie’s money privately while resenting what accepting it said about him.
“So you pushed me into a pool.”
His face hardened.
“I was drunk.”
“Ethan blocked the ladder.”
“He was joking.”
“Your mother laughed.”
“She was embarrassed because you’d been rude to her.”
Maddie stared at the man she had married.
He could explain every individual moment.
What he could not explain was the pattern they formed together.
She walked upstairs and pulled an overnight bag from the closet.
Bradley followed.
“Where are you going?”
“Nora’s.”
“Over one stupid night?”

“No. I’m leaving because I finally understand the years before it.”
