Chapter 14 - THE LAST OFFER SILAS MADE ME
Silas requested one final settlement conference.
Our divorce was already filed.
Vale Meridian had formally removed him as chief executive.
His remaining shares were subject to dispute because some had been pledged without authorization.
He looked exhausted.
No tailored suit could hide it.
“I’ll give you everything,” he said.
“I don’t want everything.”
“My shares.”
“The board will deal with those.”
“The apartment.”
“I don’t want it.”
He looked confused.
For years, every conflict in his world ended with ownership.
Then he said, “I want Isabel to know me.”
I waited.
“I know I don’t deserve anything from you.”
“That isn’t the same question.”
“I’m her father.”
“You were her father in that hospital room.”
He flinched.
“I never wanted her hurt.”
“You were willing to terrify her mother at thirty-three weeks pregnant because you needed a signature.”
He looked down.
“I hated your father.”
“No. You hated what knowing about him made you think about yourself.”
Silas did not argue.
That was progress.
Not redemption.
He agreed to plead guilty to charges related to coercion, forged corporate records, and unlawful conduct during the hospital confrontation.
Odalys negotiated separately.
Adrian chose to fight the financial charges.
Before leaving, Silas asked one question.
“Did Marcus really freeze my accounts from that phone?”
I almost smiled.
“No.”
He stared at me.
“Then what was it?”
“A phone.”
For several seconds, he looked embarrassed in a way prison had not managed to make him.
All that fear.
All that mythology.
All the assumptions about power.
He had helped destroy his marriage partly because he believed everyone else knew a secret language of control he had never been taught.
I stood.
“You should have checked who you married.”
This time, the sentence meant something different.
I was not Marcus Reyes’s hidden princess.
