Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN MICHAEL THOUGHT LOOKED LIKE AN ACCIDENT

Investigators began examining the months before the cliff.

The life insurance policy.

Michael’s debts.

Ashley’s investment.

The affair.

The anonymous photograph sent to Emma.

The trip Michael arranged.

None alone proved attempted murder.

Together they formed a direction.

Then Emma remembered something.

Michael had become obsessed with accidents during her pregnancy.

Not obviously.

He talked about risk.

Ice on stairs.

Pregnant women driving in storms.

Falls.

He installed new bathroom grab bars after Emma slipped once stepping from the shower.

Everyone called him protective.

Two months before the cliff, he suggested Emma stop driving her sports sedan because “one bad crash could leave me raising this baby alone.”

At the time it sounded loving.

Now the phrasing felt rehearsed.

Susan remembered another detail.

At Christmas Michael asked whether Emma’s life insurance covered accidental death while traveling.

Susan had teased him for being morbid.

Michael laughed.

A third clue emerged from their insurance adviser.

Michael had asked whether mountain-climbing accidents triggered different claim procedures.

He said he and Emma were considering a hiking trip after the baby was born.

The adviser thought nothing of it.

Michael never mentioned that Emma was already nine months pregnant when he planned the actual trip.

Emma’s fear changed.

The cliff had not been an explosion of desperate violence.

He had been building a story in advance.

An anxious pregnant woman.

Marital distress.

Icy terrain.

A tragic fall.

Ashley, the lover, would appear to make Emma’s emotional state even more believable.

Emma closed the file.

“He wanted her there as a witness.”

Her attorney nodded.

“A witness who would support his version.”

“And she did.”

“At first.”

Emma looked toward Grace.

Then she made a decision nobody could reverse.

“Tell investigators they can announce I’m alive.”

Susan looked surprised.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

That was different from hesitation.

Emma continued.

“I’m done letting him behave as a widower.”

The Park Service issued a carefully worded statement confirming that the missing woman from the incident had been rescued alive and was cooperating with an active investigation.

Michael learned through his lawyer.

Ashley learned minutes later.

The memorial casket was still sitting at the funeral home waiting for Susan to decide what to do with it.

Michael had stood beside an empty coffin pretending to mourn a woman recovering twenty miles away.

Now everybody knew the coffin had always been empty.

Michael stopped speaking publicly.

The life insurer formally froze claim activity.

Carver Medical placed temporary restrictions on Michael’s indirect access to company information through Emma.

The family story Michael had built began collapsing.

Then he did something Emma did not expect.

He filed through counsel for information about his newborn child.

Not the insurance.

May you like

Grace.

And Emma had to confront the fact that attempted murder had not automatically erased every legal process connecting Michael to the baby.
