Chapter 11 - THE DAY MICHAEL SAW HIS WIFE ALIVE

Michael was arrested quietly at his attorney’s office.

No funeral confrontation.

No helicopters.

No dramatic chase.

Investigators had spent weeks building the case before requesting warrants.

The charges included attempted first-degree murder and additional offenses related to the alleged plan.

Ashley faced her own criminal exposure for helping create the circumstances that brought Emma to the cliff and for lying during the initial investigation.

Her cooperation did not erase that.

Michael remained entitled to challenge the evidence.

His attorneys did exactly that.

They argued Ashley was an admitted liar protecting herself.

They argued Michael’s questions about rescue reflected ordinary trip planning.

They argued insurance discussions were normal estate preparation for a wealthy family.

They argued Emma had been emotionally distraught after discovering the affair.

Then came the preliminary hearing.

Emma attended against her mother’s advice.

She needed to see him.

Michael entered in ordinary jail clothing.

He turned.

Saw her.

Whatever preparation his lawyers had given him disappeared from his face for one second.

Emma had imagined enjoying that moment.

She didn’t.

She saw the man who had painted Grace’s nursery.

That was worse.

During a recess, Michael looked across the secured distance between them.

“Emma.”

She did not respond.

“Is Grace okay?”

Her attorney touched her arm.

She could walk away.

Emma stayed.

“She’s alive.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“You think I wanted—”

Emma laughed softly.

He stopped.

“You said she was worth more dead.”

Michael looked toward his lawyer.

“You don’t get to rewrite the mountain.”

His face tightened.

“Ashley is lying.”

“About which part?”

“She planned this.”

Emma stared at him.

That was new.

Michael leaned forward.

“She wanted your money too.”

“And you?”

“I wanted out.”

“Out of what?”

“Everything.”

His debts.

His marriage.

His affair.

His failures.

He spoke as if circumstances had become a burning building he simply had to escape.

Emma shook her head.

“You could have left me.”

“You would’ve destroyed me financially.”

“No.”

Michael looked at her.

“You would have survived financially. That’s different.”

The distinction silenced him.

Emma turned away.

Behind her Michael said:

“I loved you.”

Emma stopped.

She did not turn back.

“I believe you thought you did.”

That was the damage after the twist.

Emma no longer believed monsters belonged to another species.

Michael had loved parts of her.

He had also decided killing her was easier than facing what he had done with his own life.

Both could exist in one person.

That knowledge followed Emma out of the courthouse.
