Chapter 14 - THE LAST ACCIDENT MICHAEL TRIED TO CREATE
Michael accepted responsibility two days before the deadline.
Not all at once.
His first proposed statement described Emma’s fall as the result of a “confrontation that escalated beyond control.”
Emma rejected that language through prosecutors.
She was not negotiating his charges.
She refused to let him rename the act.
A second version admitted that Michael intentionally brought Emma to the overlook intending to cause her death and make it appear accidental.
It acknowledged financial motive.
It acknowledged Ashley’s involvement in arranging the confrontation.
It acknowledged that Michael knew Emma was pregnant.
Ashley’s separate case remained pending.
Emma read Michael’s statement only once.
Susan watched her.
“What do you feel?”
“Nothing useful.”
The plea hearing occurred in Denver months after the snow had melted from the lower elevations.
Michael stood before the judge and answered questions.
There was no triumphant speech from Emma.
No applause.
No collapse from Ashley.
The legal process did not exist to produce a viral ending.
Michael admitted what he had done.
The court accepted the plea subject to sentencing procedures.
Emma left before reporters gathered outside.
At home, Grace was learning to roll onto her stomach.
Emma placed her daughter on a blanket and watched her struggle furiously with one trapped arm.
“Come on.”
Grace kicked.
Rolled.
Then looked offended by her own success.
Emma laughed.
Susan stood in the doorway.
“You okay?”
Emma looked at her daughter.
“I think I’m becoming okay.”
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
Glad today is finished. One thing I never told you: after we lifted you off that ledge, you kept saying the same sentence all the way to the hospital.
Emma typed:
What sentence?
Daniel answered.
Don’t let my daughter grow up thinking he loved her.
Emma stared at the words.
She did not remember saying them.
Now she disagreed with the woman on the helicopter.
Michael may have loved Grace in whatever damaged way he understood love.
That did not make him safe.
Emma would not need to lie to her daughter someday.
She would need to teach her that love without safety, responsibility and respect was not enough.
That became Emma’s final choice.
