Chapter 4 - THE HEIR THEY TRIED TO STEAL

The emergency court hearing occurred three weeks later.
I entered the Mecklenburg County courthouse slowly, one hand supporting my healing abdomen beneath a charcoal dress. Reporters crowded the front steps because Harlan Media had spent two decades turning other families’ pain into public content.
Now cameras were waiting for the Harlans.
Evelyn arrived through the main entrance wearing pearls and a white suit. She smiled at the press and said the family was praying for my recovery.
Jared followed with three attorneys.
Courtney did not appear.
Inside the courtroom, Naomi asked the judge to freeze the Caldwell-Harlan trust, preserve the remaining embryos and prohibit Jared from making decisions involving my medical care or financial assets.
Jared’s attorney argued that the hysterectomy had been medically necessary.
Naomi presented the pathology report.
No cancer.
He argued that I had consented.
Naomi presented the operating-room reservation made before the supposed emergency and expert analysis showing the signatures were forged.
He argued that Courtney’s pregnancy was unrelated to me.
Naomi presented the fertility-clinic chain-of-custody records.
Jared stopped looking at the judge.
He looked at his mother.
Evelyn remained perfectly still.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Courtney entered with Nurse Elena beside her.
She looked smaller than she had in my hospital room. She wore a loose blue maternity dress and no makeup. Her hands shook around a thick envelope.
Jared stood.
“What are you doing?”
His attorney pulled him back into his seat.
Courtney walked to the witness stand.
Naomi had located her two days earlier after she left the condo Jared provided and checked into a hotel under her sister’s name.
Courtney testified that Jared recruited her while she worked in Harlan Media’s lifestyle division. Their affair began eighteen months before my surgery.
He told her I was infertile, emotionally unstable and incapable of being a mother. He said the embryos legally belonged to him because he paid for the fertility treatment.
He promised marriage.
He promised the baby would be recognized as Courtney’s.
“He said Shelby agreed to a surrogate,” Courtney whispered. “He showed me forms.”
Naomi placed copies before her.
“Are those Shelby’s real signatures?”
“No.”
“When did you learn the truth?”
Courtney looked toward me.
“The day before the surgery. Evelyn said Shelby had never agreed.”
“Did you withdraw?”
“No.”
Her honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.
“Why not?”
“Because I wanted the life Jared promised me.”
Jared muttered something beneath his breath.
Courtney’s voice strengthened.
“I told myself Shelby had money, a company and a family name. I told myself she would survive losing one more thing.”
I held her gaze.
Those were almost the same words Evelyn had used about me.
Courtney reached into her envelope.
“Then I heard what Jared planned for me.”
She had secretly recorded Jared at the condo after receiving Naomi’s message about the embryo investigation.
In the audio, Courtney asked what would happen after the birth.
Jared told her she would sign temporary guardianship papers while recovering.
When she asked when they would marry, he laughed.
“You were useful because you could carry the embryo,” he said. “Don’t confuse that with being a Harlan.”
Courtney began crying on the witness stand.
The recording continued.
Evelyn’s voice could be heard from another room.
“Once she signs, have security remove her. The baby comes home with us.”
The courtroom remained silent after the audio ended.
Courtney wiped her face.
“I helped them hurt Shelby because I thought I would become part of their family. I finally understood there was no family. There were only people Jared could use.”
The judge ordered all Harlan-controlled assets connected to the trust frozen. Jared was removed as trustee. The remaining embryos were transferred to an independent facility under court supervision.
The embryo records, medical fraud and concealed recordings were referred to state and federal prosecutors.
When court adjourned, Jared attempted to reach me in the hallway.
Sheriff’s deputies blocked him.
“Shelby,” he called. “This is still our child.”
I turned.
For years, he had used calmness like a weapon. Now his tie was crooked, his face flushed and his voice desperate.
“You had my body cut open,” I said. “You stole our embryo. You planned to imprison me inside a diagnosis you invented.”
“I made mistakes.”
“No. You made plans.”
Evelyn approached from behind him.
“You cannot raise a Harlan heir alone.”
I looked at the woman who had treated a child as a voting share before she had taken her first breath.
“She is not your heir.”
Evelyn’s lips tightened.
“She is my daughter.”
Jared laughed bitterly. “Courtney is carrying her.”
“And every record proves why.”
The elevators opened at the end of the hall.
Two state investigators and a federal agent stepped out.
Jared’s confidence disappeared.
Dr. Mercer’s cooperation, the forged hospital records, the embryo transfer and Courtney’s testimony had produced arrest warrants.
One investigator approached Jared.
Another walked toward Evelyn.
Reporters began shouting from behind the courthouse doors as word spread.
Evelyn turned to me.
“Think about the family name.”
May you like
I watched an officer place her in handcuffs.
“I am,” I said. “That’s why she’ll never be raised to fear it.”
