Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE HE NEEDED AFTERWARD

My husband tried to force my thumb onto the hospital tablet six hours after he had my uterus removed without my consent.
“Approve the procedure,” Jared said, pressing the glowing screen toward my hand. “She doesn’t need to understand every medical detail.”
The last sentence was directed at Dr. Mercer, who stood behind him with his eyes fixed on the floor.
I knocked the tablet away from my body.
Pain tore across my lower abdomen. The room tilted, but Jared caught the device before it hit the bed rail.
His expression hardened.
“Shelby, don’t make this difficult.”
I was reclined against two stiff pillows in a private hospital room overlooking downtown Charlotte. A teal blanket covered the fresh incision across my stomach. My hospital gown clung damply to my back, and both hands moved instinctively over the place where my baby had been.
Where part of my body had been.
“I said no.”
Jared leaned closer, lowering his voice into the gentle tone he used when other people were watching.
“I’m trying to save your life.”
“Then show me the pathology report.”
Dr. Mercer shifted behind him.
There had been no pathology report before the operation. No biopsy. No second opinion. No conversation in which anyone told me I had cancer.
There had only been a dark cup of medicine, a sharp prick in my arm and Jared’s face fading as I lost consciousness.
Then I woke with a surgical incision and a husband crying beside my bed.
He told me doctors had found cancerous tissue after my miscarriage. He said the hysterectomy had been an emergency. He said he had authorized it because he could not bear to lose me too.
For ten minutes, I almost believed him.
Then he asked me to sign a consent form dated the previous day.
The hospital door opened.
Courtney Briggs stepped inside wearing an olive-green satin dress. Her long blonde hair fell over one shoulder, and one hand rested protectively over the small curve beneath her waist.
She looked at me with something worse than guilt.
Ownership.
Jared’s attention shifted toward her before he could stop himself.
Courtney stroked her stomach slowly. “That child will be your heir.”
The room went silent.
Jared’s jaw tightened. “Courtney, not now.”
I looked from her hand to his face.
They had not come to check whether I was recovering.
They had come to make certain I signed away the evidence.
“Do not touch me,” I said as Jared reached for my wrist.
He withdrew his hand, but his smile remained.
“You’re medicated. You’re grieving. You don’t understand what happened.”
“I understand you brought your pregnant mistress into my hospital room.”
Courtney’s confidence flickered.
Dr. Mercer took one step toward the door.
Jared blocked him with a glance.
No one noticed Nurse Elena standing in the partially open doorway.
No one except me.
Before I had been sedated, I had hidden my phone beneath the blanket. Now my fingers found it beside my hip. I pressed the side button without turning the screen toward them.
The recording continued.
Jared placed one hand on the bed rail. “Sign the form, Shelby. We’ll discuss Courtney later.”
“Why does she keep calling her baby your heir?”
“My family’s affairs are complicated.”
“They became my affairs when you married me.”
“You married into the Harlan family,” he said. “That doesn’t make you capable of understanding it.”
There it was.
The voice he used when no audience mattered.
Cold. Contemptuous. Certain that I had nowhere left to go.
I lifted the sealed medical folder from the bedside table.
Jared noticed the phone beneath my other hand.
The color left his face.
“What did you do?”
Nurse Elena entered and moved directly to my bedside.
Courtney stepped backward.
Dr. Mercer closed his eyes.
I held Jared’s stare.
“Explain what I recorded.”
For the first time since I had met him, Jared Harlan looked afraid.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.
May you like
He knew exactly what had been said while I was unconscious.
And he knew I might have captured every word.
