Chapter 3 - THE CHILD COURTNEY WAS CARRYING

The Harlan family made its money by controlling stories.

Harlan Media owned television stations, marketing firms and regional news sites throughout the Southeast. Jared had spent his adult life deciding which facts became headlines and which disappeared beneath legal threats.

By the morning after my surgery, three online articles described me as a grieving woman suffering from “postoperative confusion.”

One praised Jared for remaining devoted through my “serious cancer diagnosis.”

Another quoted an unnamed family friend who claimed I had struggled emotionally for years.

My nonexistent cancer had become public before my real medical records were complete.

The humiliation was deliberate.

If I accused Jared later, I would look unstable and ungrateful.

Naomi filed an emergency request preventing the hospital and Harlan Media from releasing additional medical claims. She also contacted the state medical board and federal investigators because the forged consent forms crossed several legal lines.

Nurse Elena visited before her shift ended.

She closed the door behind her and handed Naomi a small evidence receipt.

“I found this in the medication-disposal container outside the original room,” she said.

It was the empty vial used to sedate me.

The medication had been signed out under another patient’s name.

“Who administered it?” Naomi asked.

“I don’t know. But the hallway camera will.”

Elena hesitated.

“There’s something else. Dr. Mercer asked to speak with investigators.”

I expected him to defend himself.

Instead, Dr. Mercer began cooperating.

He admitted Jared had approached him five months earlier. Jared knew Mercer had gambling debts and had once altered a billing code to protect the hospital from an insurance dispute.

Jared threatened to expose him unless he participated.

The original demand was not a hysterectomy.

It was access to the reproductive clinic affiliated with the hospital.

My stomach tightened when Naomi repeated that sentence.

Three years earlier, Jared and I had undergone fertility treatment after two miscarriages. Six embryos were created. One transfer failed. Another ended in an early loss.

Four embryos remained frozen.

Jared told me storage problems had destroyed them eight months before my hospitalization.

He held me while I cried.

He blamed the clinic.

He promised we would try naturally.

The embryos had never been destroyed.

Dr. Mercer helped transfer one of them to another patient under forged authorization.

That patient was Courtney Briggs.

I stared at Naomi.

“No.”

“The investigators are confirming the lab numbers.”

“No. Courtney’s baby is Jared’s.”

Naomi’s voice softened.

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

She continued carefully.

“And yours.”

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Courtney was not carrying Jared’s child from an affair.

She was carrying an embryo created from my egg and Jared’s sperm.

My biological child.

The heir Courtney had claimed while standing beside my hospital bed belonged to me.

Dr. Mercer said Evelyn designed the plan.

My father, Andrew Caldwell, had co-founded Harlan Media with Jared’s father. When my father died, his thirty-eight percent ownership stake was placed in trust. I received the income, but the voting shares would pass to my first biological child.

Until then, Jared controlled those shares through our marriage agreement.

If I divorced him without a child, the shares returned entirely to me.

If we had a child, Jared could petition to manage the child’s interest as the father.

Evelyn wanted permanent control.

Jared wanted Courtney.

They needed my child, but they no longer wanted me.

The plan was to let Courtney carry one of my embryos in secret. Then Jared would arrange for me to undergo a hysterectomy after a manufactured medical crisis. Once I was unable to produce another heir, the family would reveal Courtney as a private gestational carrier supposedly chosen with my consent.

If I objected, they would use forged psychiatric evaluations and medical records to portray me as unstable.

Then they would seek guardianship over me and custody of the baby.

My recent pregnancy had threatened everything.

I had conceived naturally before Courtney’s embryo transfer became public. If my pregnancy continued, that child would inherit before Courtney’s.

Dr. Mercer insisted the miscarriage itself had not been caused by Jared.

The medical evidence supported him.

But Jared had treated my loss as an opportunity.

The surgery was scheduled before the miscarriage because they planned to create complications during my upcoming prenatal procedure. When I lost the baby naturally, they moved faster.

The concealed audio recording captured Jared, Evelyn, Courtney and Dr. Mercer speaking while I was unconscious.

Naomi played the section investigators had recovered.

Evelyn’s voice came first.

“Once the operation is complete, Shelby has no leverage.”

Courtney asked, “What happens when she sees the baby?”

“She’ll be told you were a surrogate.”

“And if she refuses to believe that?”

Jared answered.

“By then, she won’t control her medical decisions, her company shares or where she lives.”

There was a pause.

Then Courtney asked the question that shattered the last illusion.

“Will Shelby ever be allowed to see her?”

Jared’s reply was immediate.

“No.”

My daughter.

They were talking about my daughter.

Courtney already knew the baby was genetically mine.

She had stroked her stomach in front of me and called my child Jared’s heir.

I turned away from Naomi and pressed both hands over my mouth.

For the first time since the hospital corridor, I cried.

Not for Jared.

Not even for the body he had changed without my permission.

I cried for the child growing beneath Courtney’s heart while four adults discussed her as a financial instrument.

Naomi let me cry until I could breathe again.

Then she placed the laboratory report in front of me.

The embryo identification number matched my fertility records.

There was no mistake.

“What can I do?” I asked.

“We obtain a court order preserving the pregnancy records. We request genetic testing when it is medically and legally appropriate. We freeze every trust and corporate action involving the child.”

“And Courtney?”

“She may be a participant in the fraud. She may also be someone Jared lied to.”

“She knew the baby was mine.”

“Yes.”

Naomi did not soften the truth.

“But we still don’t know what he promised her.”

My phone contained one final recording segment.

Jared and Evelyn remained in the room after Courtney left.

Evelyn said, “Once the baby is born, Courtney becomes a liability.”

Jared replied, “She thinks I’m going to marry her.”

“And are you?”

He laughed.

“No. I’m going to raise my daughter.”

Courtney had betrayed me.

But Jared was preparing to betray her too.
