Forensic extraction of Diane’s phone occurred through formal discovery related to the family-court dispute.
Not everything was relevant.
Maya fought to keep the request narrow.
Current communications about Emily.
The old Lily file.
Photographs Diane used to support claims about maternal fitness.
The result was worse than Emily expected.
There were two folders.
LILY — 2020.
BABY 2 — 2026.
That was why Lily called herself “the other baby.”
She had once seen the old folder open on Diane’s computer.
Two pregnancies.
Two evidence sets.
The naming alone made Emily feel reduced to a project.
LILY — 2020 contained postpartum photographs.
Doctor summaries.
Diane’s observations.
Messages with Ryan.
A draft petition.
BABY 2 — 2026 contained current prenatal records.
Photographs of Emily sleeping.
Screenshots of texts Emily sent during arguments.
Notes about her therapy schedule.
Ryan’s travel calendar.
A photograph of the laundry-room wall after he punched it.
That stopped everyone.
Why would Diane preserve evidence of Ryan’s aggression inside a folder supposedly proving Emily unstable?
Maya stared at the image.
“What happened here?”
Emily explained.
Ryan punched the wall during an argument about money.
Diane arrived the next morning.
Emily thought she photographed it because she was concerned.
Apparently she had saved it in Emily’s file.
Then Maya found the accompanying note.
E was screaming. R lost control because she would not stop escalating.
Emily stared.
Ryan’s violence had been converted into evidence against her.
That pattern became central.
Whenever Ryan reacted badly, Diane documented what Emily did before it.
Not what Ryan chose after.
Another file contained a voicemail transcript.
Emily crying after Ryan took her car keys during an argument.
Diane’s note:
Highly emotional. Possible impaired judgment.
No mention of the keys.
The story was being edited in real time.
Then a message between Ryan and Diane changed the stakes.
Ryan:
I don’t want to do what we almost did with Lily.
Diane:
Then hope Emily doesn’t force you.
Emily read it twice.
Ryan knew exactly what the old plan had been.
He knew what reviving it meant.
This was no longer simply a mother interfering in her son’s marriage.
Ryan had participated knowingly.
Still, one question remained.
What exactly had happened six years ago that made him say “almost”?
Maya requested the complete archived file.
Ryan’s attorney resisted.
Then agreed after reviewing it privately.
“There’s something your client needs to see,” he told Maya.
