Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME RYAN ASKED EMILY TO PROTECT HIS IMAGE
The divorce mediation happened four months after the slap.
Emily had given birth by then.
Their son, Benjamin, arrived healthy after an uncomplicated delivery.
Ryan was informed when labor began.
Emily chose not to have him in the delivery room.
He respected it.
Caroline stayed.
Ryan met Benjamin the next day under arrangements everyone had agreed upon in advance.
He cried.
Emily felt nothing dramatic.
No rush of reconciliation.
No satisfaction from excluding him.
Only relief that the decision had been hers.
At mediation, finances were manageable.
Ryan and Emily had a prenuptial agreement covering some assets.
The home had marital equity.
Parenting arrangements remained temporary pending further review.
The hardest issue was a proposed mutual nondisparagement provision.
Ryan wanted both parties barred from discussing allegations with extended family except where necessary.
Emily understood protecting the children.
Then she read one phrase.
Neither party shall communicate allegations of abuse to third parties except counsel or authorities.
Emily looked up.
“No.”
Ryan’s attorney explained:
“It’s intended to reduce conflict.”
“No.”
Ryan looked at her.
“Emily.”
She recognized the tone.
Please be reasonable.
For years it had worked.
She slid the paper back.
“I will agree not to insult you to the kids.”
Ryan nodded.
“I will agree not to use social media.”
Another nod.
“I will not agree to pretend you didn’t hit me.”
Ryan looked down.
“This will follow me forever.”
Emily stared.
There it was.
One last request that she manage the consequence of his behavior.
“I didn’t make that choice for you.”
Ryan swallowed.
He nodded.
Then surprised everyone.
“Remove the clause.”
His attorney looked at him.
“Ryan—”
“Remove it.”
Emily watched him.
It did not repair the marriage.
It was simply the first time he accepted that her truth did not exist to protect his reputation.
Diane was not included in the mediation.
She had no independent claim over the children.
Her future contact would depend on parental decisions, court orders where relevant, and whether Emily eventually felt safe.
For now, there was none.
