Chapter 13 - EMILY STOPPED TRYING TO LOOK LIKE THE PERFECT MOTHER

The custody evaluation required uncomfortable honesty.

Emily hated parts of it.

She admitted she had prenatal anxiety.

Admitted she sometimes cried in front of Lily.

Admitted she screamed at Ryan during the laundry-room argument.

Admitted she once threw his phone onto the bed.

Admitted she had considered leaving for months without telling him.

The evaluator asked:

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

Emily thought.

“Because I was afraid of his reaction.”

“Had he hit you before?”

“No.”

“Threatened you?”

“Not directly.”

“Then what were you afraid of?”

Emily looked down.

“The way every disagreement became something I had to fix before he calmed down.”

The evaluator nodded.

Not agreement.

Documentation.

Ryan gave his account too.

He admitted the slap.

Admitted blocking the doorway.

Admitted sharing Emily’s medical portal access with Diane.

Admitted collecting photographs.

Admitted he knew the six-year-old plan had been wrong because he had stopped it then.

That last admission mattered.

He could not claim ignorance.

Diane was interviewed separately.

So was Caroline.

Lily’s therapist provided limited relevant observations while protecting the child’s privacy.

Nobody asked Lily which parent she “wanted.”

Emily insisted on that.

“She’s six.”

Ryan agreed.

For once, they were aligned.

The temporary arrangements continued while the divorce proceeded.

No instant final custody ruling.

No dramatic stripping of parental rights.

Ryan had work to do.

Emily did too.

Her therapist pointed out something uncomfortable.

Emily had begun checking Lily constantly.

“Are you okay?”

“Did Dad say anything bad?”

“Did Grandma ever tell you something else?”

The therapist stopped her.

“You’re turning Lily into a source.”

Emily went still.

“I’m protecting her.”

“Maybe.”

That word hurt.

“You hated being documented instead of cared for.”

Emily understood immediately.

She went home and changed.

No more questions after visits unless Lily wanted to talk.

No scanning her face for clues.

No asking whether Ryan seemed angry.

Protection could become control from either direction.

That realization saved Emily from repeating the same family logic under a different moral banner.

Months earlier, Diane had claimed Emily needed managing.

Now Emily refused to make Lily manage the divorce.
