Chapter 12 - Judith Finally Said What She Believed She Was Saving

Judith requested one meeting with Camille.

Camille refused twice.

The third request came through Laura.

“Mom says she wants to explain.”

Camille almost laughed.

Everyone wanted explanations after consequences arrived.

Still, she agreed to one conversation at Laura’s house.

No Maisie.

Reese was not asked to attend.

Judith arrived in a camel coat and pearls, dressed as if presentation could return authority to her.

Camille sat across from her.

Judith began badly.

“You’ve never understood what Graham went through when his father left.”

“I’m not here to discuss Graham’s childhood.”

“You should be. It explains everything.”

“No. It explains fear. It doesn’t explain permission.”

Judith’s eyes hardened.

“You had a career, your sister, your own money, that nanny. Graham saw how easily you could build a life without him.”

Camille stared.

“So you decided to help him prepare to take my daughter?”

“We decided he shouldn’t be helpless.”

“You manufactured childcare failures.”

“We showed what could happen when strangers become more important than family.”

Camille leaned back.

There it was.

Judith’s worldview reduced to one sentence.

Family meant hierarchy.

Not safety.

Not honesty.

Hierarchy.

“Reese saved Maisie.”

Judith’s jaw moved.

“She interfered.”

Camille almost stood.

Instead she stayed.

“Interfered with what?”

Judith did not answer.

Camille waited.

Finally Judith said, “With a plan that was supposed to scare you into taking your responsibilities seriously.”

Camille felt something colder than anger.

“You were willing to frighten a five-month-old baby to discipline her mother.”

“That isn’t what I said.”

“It’s exactly what you said.”

Judith looked toward the window.

“I was trying to keep my son from losing his child.”

“No.”

Camille stood.

“You were trying to keep your son from experiencing a life you couldn’t control.”

Judith’s face tightened.

Camille picked up her coat.

“You lost access to Maisie because of what you did. Not because I hate you. Not because Reese manipulated me. Because I watched you choose your plan over my baby.”

At the doorway, Judith asked quietly, “Do you think Graham will ever forgive me?”

Camille turned.

“For once, I don’t think Graham’s feelings are the most important thing in the room.”

Then she left.

It was the first conversation Camille had ever had with Judith that did not end with Camille wondering whether she had been too harsh.
