Chapter 10 - The Trap Was Built for Camille
The major truth surfaced during a custody-focused mediation session.
Graham did not confess dramatically.
He resisted.
Qualified.
Minimized.
His own attorney repeatedly told him to answer the question being asked.
Finally the mediator asked:
“Before the stroller incident, were you gathering examples of what you considered poor childcare decisions made by Camille?”
Graham stared at the table.
“Yes.”
Camille stopped breathing for a second.
The mediator continued.
“Why?”
“Because Mom thought Camille might leave.”
“That doesn’t answer the question.”
Graham’s attorney spoke quietly to him.
Then Graham said it.
“I wanted to be prepared.”
Prepared.
The harmless word Camille would hate forever.
Graham admitted that Judith had encouraged him to keep track of every disagreement involving Reese.
Not because Reese was actually negligent.
Because Camille consistently trusted her.
Judith believed that if they could create one serious incident while Reese was alone with Maisie, Graham could later argue Camille had ignored repeated warnings about an unsafe nanny.
The stroller was supposed to roll only several feet across the flat nursery floor.
Judith planned to rush in, stop it herself, and claim Reese had forgotten the brake.
Graham believed nobody would be hurt.
That was why he had told Judith to wait until Reese was alone.
But Camille came home early.
Reese entered sooner than Judith expected.
And Judith, seeing the stroller move, waited too long because she wanted Reese to be the one caught beside it.
Reese stopped the stroller first.
The entire setup reversed.
Camille stared at Graham.
“You were trying to manufacture a reason to say I was careless with Maisie.”
Graham’s face was gray.
“I was scared you’d take her.”
“So you created danger to prove I tolerated danger.”
“I didn’t think Mom would—”
“Stop.”
Camille finally understood three earlier contradictions.
Why Graham had repeated minor complaints without firing Reese.
Why Judith kept emphasizing that Camille had personally chosen the nanny.
Why Graham had been furious the moment Reese prevented the stroller from moving farther.
They needed Reese employed.
Until they needed her blamed.
Camille had spent weeks believing Graham’s betrayal was helping Judith remove someone she disliked.
It was worse.
