Chapter 1 - The Sentence Graham Couldn’t Take Back

The stroller was already moving when Reese saw it.
She came through the nursery doorway carrying a clean burp cloth and stopped so abruptly her shoulder struck the frame.
Maisie’s padded stroller was rolling toward the bright upstairs hallway.
Judith stood three feet away.
Watching.
Not reaching for it.
Reese dropped the cloth.
She lunged across the nursery, caught the handle with both hands, and pulled the stroller to a safe stop before it reached the doorway.
Five-month-old Maisie screamed.
Reese locked the brake immediately and bent toward her.
“Why was her brake released?!”
Judith’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Calculation.
She stepped forward and slapped Reese across the face.
“You’re hired help. No one will believe you over me.”
Reese stared at her.
Then Graham came storming through the hallway.
He did not look at the stroller.
He did not check his daughter.
He grabbed Reese by the upper arm and pulled her away.
“You’re done here. Get out of my house.”
Camille rushed in behind him.
She went straight to Maisie, released the stroller straps, and lifted her daughter securely against her chest.
Reese pointed at Judith.
“She watched that stroller move and did nothing.”
Judith did not deny it.
She smiled.
Barely.
Camille saw it.
And something inside her shifted.
She stepped between Reese and Graham.
“Why are both of you trying harder to get rid of Reese than to ask what happened to our baby?”
No one answered.
Graham looked at Judith.
Judith looked back.
Fast.
Too fast.
Then Judith snapped, “She ruined everything!”
Graham wheeled toward his mother.
“I told you to wait until Reese was alone with the baby!”
The sentence landed before he could stop it.
Camille stared at her husband.
Reese slowly turned toward him.
Judith’s face went blank.
Graham opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
Camille backed away with Maisie against her chest.
“Don’t touch us.”
“Camille—”
She recoiled when he moved closer.
For six months, Camille had blamed exhaustion for the strange tension inside their Hinsdale home.
Judith’s criticism.
Graham’s secrecy.
Reese’s growing uneasiness.
The little comments about Camille working too much.
The repeated questions about who really cared for Maisie.
Now she understood one thing with terrifying clarity.

The stroller had not rolled by accident.
And whatever Graham and Judith had planned, Reese had interrupted it.
