Chapter 14 - RICHARD’S LAST COMMAND

Richard asked to meet Claire before finalizing the Atlanta case.

She refused.

He asked again through counsel.

Claire agreed only to a video call with Natalie present.

Richard appeared from his Virginia home in a plain blue shirt.

No medals.

No uniform.

Claire had never seen him look so ordinary.

“You look well,” he said.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Fine.”

Silence.

Then:

“I should not have struck you.”

Claire waited.

“Or grabbed you.”

Still she waited.

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want me to say?”

“Nothing I have to pull out of you.”

He looked away.

“Austin is destroying his future.”

There it was.

Richard’s real reason for the call.

“He is amending his statement.”

“I know.”

“He’s accepting language that makes him look weak.”

Claire stared at her father.

“Maybe weakness isn’t admitting somebody pressured you.”

“He was an officer.”

“He was your son.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“That should have made him stronger.”

Claire finally understood there would be no perfect breakthrough.

Richard could acknowledge violence when consequence required it.

He still viewed vulnerability as failure.

“You taught him that being your son meant never embarrassing you.”

Richard said nothing.

“You taught me being your daughter meant absorbing whatever happened afterward.”

His face shifted.

Barely.

“I gave you everything.”

“Except permission to disagree without paying for it.”

Richard looked toward the camera.

“Withdraw your statement that I tried to silence you at the gala.”

Claire almost laughed.

The final command.

Still phrased as family necessity.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

“You don’t know what that wording does.”

“I know exactly what it describes.”

Richard’s face reddened.

Then he stopped.

Perhaps he remembered the protective order.

Perhaps counseling had taught him something.

Perhaps he simply knew the call was documented.

Claire no longer needed to decide which.

May you like

“Goodbye, Dad.”

She ended the call before he could give her another instruction.
