Chapter 1 - THE PUNCH

General Richard Waverly’s fist was already moving when Claire realized he had stopped pretending they were having a family argument.

His knuckles struck the left side of her face.

Her head snapped sideways.

The polished ballroom floor rushed toward her.

Claire caught herself on one knee, one hand flat against the wood while warm blood from her split lip touched the back of her wrist.

Around them, Atlanta’s most polished military donors, defense executives, retired officers, and political fundraisers went silent.

Nobody moved.

Richard stood over her in his decorated dark dress uniform.

“You disgrace this family.”

Claire heard Eleanor inhale behind him.

Her mother did not come forward.

Austin didn’t either.

Her older brother stood several feet away in Army dress uniform, broad-shouldered and perfectly composed, wearing the same expression he had worn their entire childhood whenever Richard’s anger landed on somebody else.

Stay still.

Let it finish.

Richard grabbed a thick handful of Claire’s blonde hair near the scalp and yanked her upward.

Pain flashed across her head.

Claire cried out and braced one palm against the floor.

Austin’s mouth twisted.

“She deserved that.”

Something inside Claire went cold.

Not broken.

Finished.

She looked past Richard at the ballroom guests deliberately studying their drinks.

Men who had toasted courage fifteen minutes earlier.

Women who chaired foundations for military families.

Retired officers who knew exactly what intimidation looked like and had apparently decided the Waverlys were a private matter.

Claire wrapped both hands around Richard’s wrist.

He tightened his grip.

She tore his hand out of her hair and shoved his arm away.

“I’m done protecting you.”

Richard froze.

So did Austin.

Claire pulled her phone from the small evening bag hanging from her wrist.

The screen was cracked from the fall, but the file was still there.

A paused video thumbnail showed men in Army combat uniforms beside a tactical vehicle on a Georgia training range.

Austin’s face lost every trace of smugness.

Richard stared at the phone.

“Put that phone down.”

Claire tapped the screen.

The thumbnail expanded.

A younger Austin appeared beside a vehicle.

Behind him, barely visible at the edge of the frame, stood Richard.

Richard’s hand stopped halfway toward the phone.

Claire saw fear replace rage.

That was when she understood something she should have understood two years earlier.

May you like

Her father had never been afraid of the video because it embarrassed Austin.

He was afraid because Richard himself was in it.
