Chapter 7 - The Pattern No One Wanted Named
Rebecca would not surrender the drive until she had spoken to an attorney.
Detective Bell did not pressure her. He explained that the original motel recording system, export method, and chain of custody would matter if prosecutors used the footage.
While Rebecca arranged representation, Erin rebuilt the timeline.
At 9:31, she sent Linda the motel video.
At 9:44, Linda told Frank to come home.
At 10:03, Erin’s heart rate spiked.
At 10:07, the garage smart-opener account showed the door closing.
At 10:48, Linda called 911.
At 11:22, Linda’s car entered the Brookstone Motor Lodge parking lot.
The motel footage, if authentic, would show both parents leaving Erin unconscious, then driving to Rebecca.
Detective Bell obtained the garage-opener data through Erin’s family account. Frank had disabled the interior garage camera at 9:58 p.m.
He told the company’s technical support that the camera had been malfunctioning.
The previous week, it had worked normally.
The pattern reached farther than one violent moment.
Frank had anticipated confrontation.
Linda had directed Erin into the garage, away from neighbors.
They had delayed medical care.
Then they had tried to remove independent evidence.
Erin sent the timeline to Owen.
He called the next morning.
“Mom says the texts are out of context.”
“What context makes them acceptable?”
“She says she was trying to keep you calm.”
“She told Dad where I was.”
“I know.”
His voice softened, but he still resisted.
“Rebecca’s trying to save herself. She’s had an affair with a married man for a year and a half.”
“That doesn’t make the cameras imaginary.”
“No, but it means she has reasons to lie.”
“So does Mom.”
Owen was quiet.
Erin wanted him to choose her immediately. She wanted one member of the family to see the evidence and remove all doubt.
Instead, he said, “I need to hear it myself.”
After the call, Erin recognized another family pattern.
Frank demanded loyalty.
Linda managed appearances.
Owen waited for certainty so complete that choosing a side would cost him nothing.
Erin had done the same thing for years.
She had excused bruising arguments, slammed doors, and Frank’s threats because each incident alone seemed insufficient to justify breaking the family open.
