Chapter 11 - The Damage After Everyone Heard
Owen watched the motel footage at his attorney’s office.
He called Erin afterward and said nothing for nearly a minute.
Finally, he whispered, “She told him to scare you.”
“Yes.”
“She stood there while you were on the floor.”
“Yes.”
“I’ve been letting her sleep in my apartment.”
Erin heard him begin to cry.
“Where else was she supposed to go?”
The question was not an accusation. It was the same trap their mother had used for years.
If Linda suffered consequences, someone else became cruel for allowing them.
Owen moved her into a furnished rental and stopped discussing the case with her.
Rebecca lost both jobs. She rented a room from her adult daughter in Newark and agreed to testify despite the damage to her reputation.
Walsh Heating and Cooling laid off six employees. Frank told the remaining crews that Erin and Rebecca had conspired to destroy the company.
Erin’s clinic received anonymous emails accusing her of instability and elder abuse. Her supervisor extended support but warned that returning would require a gradual schedule.
Truth did not restore Erin’s life.
It revealed how much of that life had depended on silence.
During therapy, Erin confronted her own blind spot.
She had always gone to Linda after Frank’s worst outbursts.
When he mocked Erin’s career, Linda explained that he was tired.
When he punched a hole through Erin’s bedroom door at nineteen, Linda bought a framed mirror to cover it.
When Erin suspected the affair, she sent the video to her mother rather than directly confronting Frank or leaving.
“I thought she was the safe parent,” Erin told Paige.
“She was the quieter parent,” Paige said.
The distinction hurt.
Linda refused to speak with investigators without immunity. Frank denied the assault and claimed the motel audio captured a sarcastic argument taken out of context.
Their attorneys argued the video proved marital dysfunction, not what happened in the garage.
The truth was powerful.
It was not self-executing.
The prosecutor needed witnesses, medical testimony, digital records, and a timeline strong enough to survive attack.
