Chapter 5 - The Message Her Mother Couldn’t Explain
Erin’s old phone was never found.
The cloud account, however, had preserved fragments.
A technician at the phone carrier helped Erin regain access after she proved her identity. Most photographs from the final week were missing because the device had not completed its nightly backup.
The message history remained.
At 9:31 p.m., Erin had sent Linda a twelve-second video.
The file itself showed only as an unavailable attachment, but the accompanying text survived.
Dad is at Brookstone with Rebecca. I saw them kiss. I’m going to confront him unless you tell me there’s something I don’t understand.
Linda replied at 9:33.
Come home. Use the garage. I don’t want the neighbors hearing this.
At 9:36:
Do not call Owen. Do not send the video to anyone.
At 9:44:
I told your father you’re upset. He’s on his way.
Erin stared at the screen until the words blurred.
Linda had not discovered her after an accidental fall.
She had arranged the meeting.
Paige sat beside her on the couch.
“You need to send this to Detective Bell.”
Erin forwarded the export before she could reconsider.
The next message was from Frank at 10:01.
Where are you?
Erin had answered:
Garage. Mom is here.
Her smartwatch recorded the violent heart-rate spike two minutes later.
Detective Bell called that afternoon.
“This changes the timeline,” he said. “It proves your mother knew about the motel and summoned your father.”
“Will you arrest them?”
“Not based on texts alone. We still need to establish what happened inside that garage.”
Erin understood the caution.
She also understood something more painful.
For years, whenever Frank became angry, Linda had taken Erin aside and said, Let me handle him.
Erin had mistaken mediation for protection.
Perhaps Linda had only been managing what the rest of the family was allowed to see.
Bell asked whether the name Rebecca Shaw meant anything beyond the affair.
“She runs Dad’s office.”
“She also rents an apartment behind the Brookstone Motor Lodge.”
Erin had not known that.
Before ending the call, Bell said Rebecca had refused to answer questions.

But thirty minutes later, Erin received a message from an unfamiliar number.
Your father lied to both of us. I have something he doesn’t know I kept.
