Chapter 14 - The Last Time We Offered Silence

Rachel sat outside the courtroom for nearly an hour before she was called.

Trent’s attorney approached Caroline with one final proposal.

If Rachel refused to testify, Trent would release his claim to the fifty-two thousand dollars and support returning part of the frozen reserve to her.

Rachel could preserve enough money for an apartment, legal fees, and a new beginning.

In return, she had to say she no longer remembered whether he punched me or pushed past me.

She looked toward me.

For most of her marriage, Rachel had treated truth as something negotiable when consequences became expensive.

This offer tested whether anything had changed.

“What happens to the customers?” she asked.

Trent’s attorney said the financial proceeding would address them separately.

“What happens to my mother?”

He did not answer.

Rachel rejected the offer.

When she testified, she did not portray herself as innocent.

She admitted approving the house sale, signing company documents without proper review, taking my phone, and lying to the responding officer.

Then she described the punch.

She described Trent watching me fall, inventing the story that I had lost my balance, and destroying the camera.

The security footage supported her account.

The medical records established my injuries.

The smart-lock history established that he entered without permission and remained after the attack.

Trent testified that I blocked him, insulted him, and raised my phone as a weapon.

The judge asked why he crushed the camera.

Trent said he believed I had been spying on him.

The explanation made no sense inside a home he did not own.

Before the hearing ended, the Attorney General filed its civil enforcement complaint against Northline and Trent’s new company. Aster Bridge formally placed the frozen reserve under court supervision.

The money could no longer be released through Rachel’s signature or Trent’s pressure.

As the clerk accepted the final filing, Trent turned toward my daughter.

For the first time, Rachel did not lower her eyes.
