Chapter 11 - The Damage After She Chose the Truth
Rachel corrected her false statement in writing.
She admitted Trent struck me intentionally, destroyed the camera, and told her to claim I fell. She also provided messages showing he knew my house had no mortgage and believed my banking history could satisfy Aster Bridge’s financial review.
Trent responded by suing Rachel over the fifty-two thousand dollars and accusing her of sabotaging Northline.
The school terminated her employment after determining that she had failed to disclose her majority ownership in a company facing extensive consumer complaints.
She moved into a small furnished apartment near Pineville and began applying for bookkeeping positions.
The five hundred thousand dollars remained unavailable.
Several Northline customers filed claims asserting that the reserve should pay refunds before Rachel recovered her home equity. Aster Bridge asked a court to determine how the competing claims should be handled.
There would be no simple transfer returning Rachel to the day before the sale.
She might recover a substantial amount.
She would not recover all of it.
The assault case also moved slowly. The footage showed what Trent did, but his attorney challenged the context and questioned whether my dental injuries occurred when I struck the console rather than from the punch itself.
David prepared for months of hearings rather than promising immediate justice.
I confronted my own mistake during that period.
I had recognized Trent’s dishonesty early, but I used contempt where clarity might have helped. I treated his business as foolish without asking Rachel directly whether she felt safe or understood the documents she signed.
That did not make me responsible for their choices.
It did explain why Rachel expected judgment before help.
She had hidden danger because she thought I would use being right as a weapon.
I began meeting with a counselor who specialized in family estrangement. Rachel attended separate sessions.
We did not meet together.
Truth had changed the direction of the family, but it had not built a bridge between us.
Meanwhile, Trent continued selling access to private business-coaching calls under a new name.
The Attorney General’s office needed evidence connecting the new operation to Northline’s customer lists and payment structure.
