Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY STORY EVERYONE PREFERRED
By June, relatives had divided the scandal into versions that made them comfortable.
Some said Caroline had stolen hundreds of thousands because she was greedy.
Others said I had ruined my daughter over expenses I could easily afford.
Ryan’s family said Susan had been manipulated.
My family said Susan had manipulated Caroline.
None of those versions required anyone to hold more than one truth at a time.
Susan sold the diamond ring back to the jeweler.
The cruise company refunded most of the fare.
She sent both amounts to Bennett House through her attorney.
Then she listed her Gladwyne condo for sale.
“I accepted money I knew I should have questioned,” she wrote in a short statement. “I intend to return what I can.”
Ryan did not praise her.
He moved into a rented apartment and filed for legal separation from Caroline.
His employer also opened an internal review after learning Bennett House had paid some of his club and travel expenses.
Ryan claimed he had assumed Caroline covered them personally.
Records partly supported him.
They also showed he had asked once, by text:
Is your mom really paying for this?
Caroline replied:
Consider it part of my comp.
He never asked again.
The company audit reached me too.
I had personally approved several executive expense reports without reviewing backup because Caroline prepared them.
The board required new controls.
No family member could approve another family member’s expense.
All transactions above five thousand dollars required two unrelated signatures.
I stepped down from day-to-day financial approval.
For thirty years, I had treated personal oversight as a substitute for systems.
The scandal proved how fragile that was.
Then Marcus found a document inside Caroline’s archived email.
It was not financial.
It was a draft letter to Ryan dated almost two years earlier.
She had never sent it.
I am tired of buying time until I become the woman you think you married.
The next paragraph referred to Susan’s debt.
The final paragraph referred to the house.
And one sentence changed the entire shape of Caroline’s marriage.
