Chapter 11 - THE PEOPLE HER LIES HAD MADE INTO ENEMIES

Ryan filed for divorce.

Caroline stopped speaking to Susan.

Then she stopped speaking to me.

For several weeks, every relationship around her seemed to disappear at once.

Her attorney negotiated access for her to retrieve personal items from the Villanova house.

I was not present.

The property manager later told me Caroline stood in the dining room for several minutes holding the cheap plastic flower.

She put it in her bag.

I did not know why.

At Bennett House, the financial damage became measurable.

Our insurer covered part of the loss after the investigation concluded that company controls had failed but funds had been misappropriated.

Coverage did not include everything.

I canceled executive bonuses for the year, including my own.

Two hotel clients reduced our scope.

We laid off three administrative employees whose jobs had become unsustainable.

Those three people had nothing to do with my family.

I attended every termination meeting.

It was the least I could do.

Susan’s condo sold below asking price. After paying her mortgage and returning disputed funds, she moved into a smaller townhouse near Ryan.

He rarely visited.

He was angry that she had hidden the original investment loss, even though she had tried to correct that mistake later.

I understood the contradiction.

People often punish the person who eventually tells the truth because the earlier silence still had consequences.

My own accountability came from Caroline’s attorney.

He produced emails showing that for years I had criticized her financial decisions in language I would never have used with another executive.

Careless.

Immature.

Not ready.

Once, after she disagreed with me during a board meeting, I wrote:

When this company is yours, you can make expensive mistakes. Until then, stop acting entitled to what I built.

I remembered being angry.

I did not remember how closely those words resembled the accusation Caroline had been hearing inside herself ever since.

My behavior did not cause her theft.

But I had made failure so humiliating that hiding it became emotionally easier than bringing it to me.

The truth had exposed Caroline.

It also removed my ability to pretend I had simply been the good mother betrayed by an ungrateful daughter.
