Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING I COULD HAVE BOUGHT FOR HER

Caroline’s attorney proposed a civil settlement before the criminal case was resolved.

She would surrender her company equity, liquidate her retirement account above protected amounts, and repay as much as possible over several years.

She would resign permanently from Bennett House.

She would also provide testimony regarding every expense.

In return, the company would state accurately that it supported restitution-focused resolution rather than asking prosecutors for the harshest available penalty.

The board asked what I wanted.

There had been a time when I would have written a check, covered the loss, and called it protecting my daughter.

That would have been another version of the same family habit.

Money had been our language for too long.

I paid for opportunities.

Susan accepted gifts.

Ryan measured success through property.

Caroline used money to conceal shame.

I told the board I supported the settlement only if every amount remained documented and Caroline accepted responsibility without calling the transactions advances.

She agreed.

Before signing, she asked to see me alone.

I refused the “alone” part.

Our attorneys stayed.

She placed the cheap pink flower on the table between us.

“I bought this that morning.”

I looked at it.

“I assumed you sent an assistant.”

“No.”

“Why?”

She rubbed the plastic stem between her fingers.

“I wanted you to feel cheap.”

The honesty hurt more than another excuse would have.

“Did it work?”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“Then you should understand why paying back money cannot repair everything.”

She began crying.

I did not reach for her.

That was difficult.

But comfort had too often arrived before accountability in our family.

Caroline signed the settlement.

She also signed a formal statement accepting responsibility for the unauthorized company spending.

The remaining criminal decision belonged to prosecutors and the court.

For once, neither motherhood nor money could stop the process after it had begun.
