Chapter 6 - The Story Viola Wanted Everyone to Believe

Viola moved first through gossip.

By the end of the week, two of Matteo’s aunts had called to say they “hoped Elena was feeling less emotional.”

One cousin texted Matteo that “everyone regretted the scene.”

Not Carlo’s violence.

The scene.

Another relative suggested Luca had “never really been in danger.”

Elena nearly threw her phone across the room when she heard that one.

Viola’s version was elegant and poisonous.

Elena had overreacted at a tense family discussion.

Carlo, though certainly theatrical, had only been trying to “wake Matteo up.”

Helen—the family never used that name; I need consistency. Wait grandmother not in this story. Ignore.

Within days, the event had been reframed as a regrettable misunderstanding involving heightened tempers and a protective mother.

The baby became scenery.

Elena became the problem.

Matteo called his mother.

“Stop talking about my wife.”

Viola answered coolly, “Then stop letting her humiliate this family.”

Elena heard the conversation on speaker.

“She humiliated the family?” Matteo said. “Carlo held my son over fire.”

“No one would have let anything happen.”

“You keep saying that like it matters.”

“What matters,” Viola said, “is that your wife refuses to understand the responsibilities that come with bearing the Russo name.”

Elena took the phone.

“The only responsibility I see is protecting my child from you.”

There was silence on the line.

Then Viola laughed softly.

“My dear, if I wanted your child, you wouldn’t still be in the house.”

The line went dead.

Matteo stared at the phone.

Elena went still.

He looked at her.

“She meant legally.”

“She meant exactly what she wanted me to hear.”

That night, Matteo slept badly.

At 3:10 a.m., Elena found him in Luca’s nursery, standing over the crib.

He did not startle when she entered.

“I should have cut them off years ago,” he said quietly.

Elena leaned against the doorframe.

“Why didn’t you?”

He took too long to answer.

“Because some part of me kept believing my mother had limits.”

Elena looked at Luca’s sleeping face.

The fire pit.

The trust papers.

The whispered rumor campaign.

No, she thought.

Viola did have limits.

She had simply placed them somewhere far beyond where ordinary people would have stopped.
