Chapter 1 - The Lesson by the Fire

The first thing Matteo Russo heard was his wife screaming his name.

“Matteo! Save Luca!”

He turned so fast his shoulder struck a catering server, sending a flute of champagne crashing onto the stone courtyard.

Across the sprawling patio of his mother’s estate, Carlo was standing at the edge of the outdoor fire pit with fourteen-month-old Luca in both hands.

The baby was crying so hard his little body was shaking.

For one impossible second, Matteo’s mind refused to understand what he was seeing.

Then Elena lunged toward Carlo.

“Give him back!”

Carlo held Luca higher, just above the orange flame.

Around them, guests in evening clothes had gone still.

The decorative lanterns hanging from the courtyard beams swayed in the summer air. Music from the string quartet faltered somewhere behind the catering tables. Nobody moved quickly enough.

Matteo did.

He crossed the courtyard at a dead run and slammed into Carlo with enough force to wrench Luca free.

Luca screamed.

Matteo turned instantly and placed him against Elena’s chest.

“Take him,” he said.

Elena clutched their son so tightly she could barely breathe.

Viola Russo stepped forward in her burgundy gown, pearls steady against her throat, her expression cold and composed.

“We were teaching your wife a lesson in respect.”

Matteo stared at his mother.

Then Carlo grabbed his shoulder from behind.

Matteo spun, shook him off, and drove one brutal punch into his older brother’s face.

Carlo reeled backward into the catering station. Silver trays, baskets of bread, glasses, and serving utensils exploded across the stone floor.

“You held my son over the fire,” Matteo said.

Carlo lunged again.

Matteo kicked him hard in the stomach.

Carlo doubled over and flew backward into a decorative screen, bringing down ribbons, lanterns, and branches in a violent collapse.

Guests gasped.

Elena stood frozen behind Matteo, Luca buried against her shoulder, sobbing into her cream dress.

Carlo tried to rise.

Matteo walked straight through the wreckage toward him.

He stopped over his brother, eyes full of a coldness Elena had never seen before.

“You’re finished.”

Then he looked up.

And discovered his mother was not frightened.

She looked furious.

Not because Carlo had endangered a child.

Because Matteo had chosen Elena and Luca over the family in front of everyone.

That was when Elena realized the fire pit had never been the real point.

Luca had been a message.

And Matteo’s family had just sent it in public.
