Chapter 13 - Viola Came Without Witnesses

Viola appeared at their house alone on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

No lawyers.

No assistant.

No Carlo.

Elena nearly didn’t let her in.

But Matteo was home, and he said quietly, “I want to hear what she says when there’s nobody left to impress.”

Viola stood in the library, still elegant, still controlled, but older than she had seemed before.

“I came to prevent something irreversible.”

Matteo gave a humorless smile.

“That’s new.”

Viola ignored it.

“The board is overreacting. Carlo will be disciplined. Administrative reforms will be made. The family can still settle this privately.”

Elena held Luca on her hip and said nothing.

Matteo did.

“Why did you let him do it?”

At last, a question with nowhere to hide.

Viola took a long breath.

“Because I thought you would stop him before it became what it became.”

Elena almost laughed from disbelief.

“You gambled on your own grandson’s terror.”

Viola turned toward her.

“No child was ever going to be harmed.”

“You still say that like it matters.”

For the first time, Viola’s composure cracked.

“You don’t understand what your father built,” she said to Matteo. “After Antonio died, every creditor, every rival, every ambitious executive waited to see whether the family would split. Carlo is flawed, yes. But fragmentation destroys dynasties.”

Matteo looked at her steadily.

“So you chose the dynasty.”

“I chose survival.”

Elena answered before he could.

“No. You chose control and called it survival.”

Viola’s eyes moved to Luca.

He looked back at her blankly, one tiny hand twisted in Elena’s dress.

Something passed over Viola’s face.

Not tenderness exactly.

Recognition, perhaps.

Of cost.

“I never hated the child,” she said.

Elena’s voice was ice-cold.

“You didn’t have to hate him to use him.”

Viola closed her eyes.

The apology that might have followed never came.

Instead she said, “If you force this all the way through, Carlo may lose everything.”

Matteo’s expression did not change.

“He should have thought of that before he put my son over a fire pit.”

Viola nodded once, as if some final argument inside her had failed.

She left without touching the baby.

After the door closed, Elena turned to Matteo.

“She still thinks this is about consequences to Carlo.”

Matteo looked toward the rain-dark driveway.

“That’s because she still doesn’t understand the consequence already happened.”
