Chapter 8 - ELENA FILED FOR SEPARATION BEFORE SHE FELT READY
Elena did not want a divorce while holding a twelve-day-old baby.
She wanted sleep.
She wanted her incision to stop hurting.
She wanted to shower without planning it around feeding.
She wanted Preston to become the man who had cried when they first saw Samuel’s heartbeat.
Instead, Preston sent her a fourteen-paragraph email.
He apologized for grabbing her.
Then explained it.
He apologized for “overstepping professionally.”
Then explained it.
He denied intending harm.
He blamed fear.
He blamed Dr. Pierce.
He blamed Elena’s “hostility toward Khloe.”
He blamed the hospital’s culture.
At the end:
Please do not destroy our family because I made mistakes trying to protect you and our son from unnecessary surgery.
Elena read it twice.
Then called her family-law attorney.
She filed for legal separation.
Not because she had decided every future year.
Because she needed the present to stop being negotiable.
Temporary parenting arrangements became complicated immediately.
Preston was Samuel’s father.
The hospital investigation did not automatically erase that.
Elena did not want it to.
She wanted Preston to be a safe father.
That was different from wanting to stay his wife.
Because of the newborn’s feeding schedule and Elena’s medical recovery, visits initially happened in shorter blocks with structured handoffs.
Preston complained.
Elena documented.
Did not debate.
Her medical leave became lonelier than she expected.
Rachel helped.
Their mother came from Michigan for two weeks.
Friends brought casseroles Elena forgot to eat.
Meanwhile Preston was placed on administrative leave pending hospital review.
Khloe was removed from clinical duties temporarily while her conduct was assessed.
The hospital informed affected patients whose privacy might have been compromised according to its process.
Elena hated becoming part of a larger institutional problem.
She also understood why it mattered.
This was no longer only about what Preston did to his wife.
Then Elena made a decision that cost her.
She agreed to provide a full statement to the hospital investigators even though her attorney warned it might become discoverable in later proceedings.
She described everything.
Including her own mistakes.
The times she accused Khloe of wanting Preston.
The harsh phone call.
The fact that she had initially interpreted professional boundary violations as romantic ones.
