Chapter 1 - THE BROKEN BED RAIL

Preston’s hand closed around Elena’s wrist as another contraction tore through her.

“Turn the epidural off.”

The nurse beside the pump looked at him.

Not Elena.

Him.

That was the moment Elena understood how completely her husband had managed to contaminate the room.

“Don’t,” she gasped.

Preston tightened his fingers against her wrist, pinning it beside the raised metal rail.

His white coat was open over blue scrubs. He was not officially part of Elena’s obstetric team. Hospital policy specifically discouraged physicians from treating immediate family members except in emergencies.

But Preston Ward was an obstetrician in the same hospital.

He knew the nurses.

He knew the anesthesiologists.

He knew which words made interference sound like professional concern.

And for the past six hours, he had been standing at the foot of Elena’s bed telling everyone that his wife was “highly anxious,” “emotionally reactive,” and “prone to changing her mind.”

As if she were not sitting right there.

The contraction intensified.

Elena cried out and gripped the rail.

Her independent obstetrician, Dr. Hannah Pierce, had left twenty minutes earlier to handle an emergency delivery across the hall. The covering resident had stepped out to call her.

Preston used the gap.

“She’s too numb,” he said toward the nurse. “She needs to feel enough to push effectively.”

The nurse’s expression tightened.

“We don’t change anesthesia without the anesthesia team.”

Preston leaned closer to Elena.

“Stop fighting everybody.”

Elena stared at him through wet strands of brown hair.

“You canceled my C-section.”

His jaw flexed.

“We discussed that.”

“No. You discussed it with everyone except me.”

Khloe Barnes stood near the monitor in blue scrubs.

Twenty-seven.

First-year resident.

The woman Preston had spent three months insisting Elena was “bullying.”

Khloe looked at the floor.

That made Elena angrier than if she had smiled.

Another contraction rose.

Preston forced Elena’s shoulder backward against the mattress.

“Push, or suffer longer.”

His palm landed hard enough that the bed jolted.

One of the nurses stepped forward.

“Dr. Ward, take your hand off her.”

Elena’s eyes locked onto Preston’s.

There.

Someone had finally said it.

Not husband.

Not worried spouse.

Dr. Ward.

A physician putting his hands on a laboring patient who had just told him no.

Elena twisted free.

“Get away from me.”

Preston reached again.

Elena struck his hand aside.

Then pain surged through her so violently that she clamped both hands around the existing metal rail and pulled.

The joint snapped loose with a sharp metallic crack.

Everyone froze.

The monitor alarm accelerated.

The nurse nearest Elena looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Her pressure is crashing.”

Preston’s arrogance disappeared.

Khloe backed away.

Another nurse hit the call button while lowering Elena’s bed.

“Elena, look at me. Stay with me.”

Elena could hear Preston breathing.

For six hours he had been telling everyone she was dramatic.

Now he was staring at the numbers like they had finally become louder than his story.

Dr. Pierce rushed into the room.

“What happened?”

The nurse answered before Preston could.

“She became hypotensive. Dr. Ward was physically restraining her.”

Silence.

Preston said, “That’s not—”

Dr. Pierce turned toward him.

“Out.”

“Hannah—”

“Now.”

Elena grabbed Dr. Pierce’s sleeve.

“The C-section.”

“I know.”

“He canceled it.”

Dr. Pierce’s eyes sharpened.

“No, Elena.”

“What?”

“I was told you canceled it.”

Even through the pain, Elena understood the difference.

Someone had not merely argued against her birth plan.

Someone had altered the record of what she wanted.
