Chapter 7 - THE TEN-POUND BABY WASN’T THE FIRST WARNING

The deeper evidence came from ultrasound scheduling.

At thirty-two weeks, Elena was supposed to have a growth scan because an earlier measurement suggested Samuel might be trending large.

The appointment was moved.

Elena remembered.

Preston said the imaging center was overbooked.

The scan happened two weeks later.

That was when the size estimate became concerning enough that Dr. Pierce discussed delivery options more seriously.

The hospital review found the original thirty-two-week appointment had not been canceled by the imaging center.

It had been changed through Elena’s portal.

From an IP address associated with the Ward home.

Elena stared at Laura.

“Preston?”

“Again, we know the access location. Not yet the fingers.”

But another message narrowed it.

Khloe to Preston:

If she gets the growth scan this week, Pierce will start talking section again.

Preston:

Move it if you can. Two weeks won’t change management.

Khloe:

You need to do it. I’m already flagged after the privacy complaint.

Preston:

Fine.

Elena stopped reading.

Rachel swore softly beside her.

Laura said:

“This is now beyond a marital disagreement.”

Elena thought about all the times Preston accused her of punishing Khloe.

He had needed Elena to believe Khloe was the center of the conflict.

Because jealousy was easy to dismiss.

Professional manipulation was not.

The messages also exposed Khloe differently.

She was not innocent.

But she was less powerful than Elena had imagined.

Several exchanges showed discomfort.

Khloe questioned inclusion criteria.

Questioned chart access.

Questioned Preston’s plan to delay the scan.

Then complied often enough to implicate herself.

Why?

Career.

Preston wrote her fellowship recommendation.

He controlled her evaluations.

He had promised to put her name on the quality-improvement publication.

Khloe was an adult physician responsible for her own choices.

She was also operating beneath a supervisor who treated loyalty as professional currency.

Elena recognized the pattern instantly.

Different relationship.

Same man.

When Khloe resisted, Preston called her disloyal.

When Elena resisted, Preston called her jealous.

When Dr. Pierce resisted, Preston called her overly interventionist.

Preston had a word for every woman who told him no.

None of the words were his name.
