Chapter 8 - THE DECISION THAT COST HER THE WEDDING

The vendors offered Mariana and Ethan a reschedule date three months later.

Lucille urged her to accept.

Not because she had apologized.

Because she wanted the wedding scandal over.

“We all need to move forward.”

Mariana almost admired the audacity.

Her mother had grabbed her, threatened her wedding and helped Derek misrepresent her property.

Now “moving forward” meant Mariana returning to normal first.

She declined the date.

Ethan was surprised.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

That was the truth.

“But I don't want our wedding to become the deadline that makes me pretend I’m okay.”

They lost additional deposits.

Some guests could not recover travel costs.

Ethan’s grandmother, eighty-six, might not be healthy enough to attend another ceremony months later.

The decision hurt people who had done nothing wrong.

Mariana carried that.

Then she made a second irreversible choice.

On Rachel’s advice, she filed a formal fraud report with Briarwood and provided a sworn statement that she had never authorized use of her property.

She also reported the unauthorized entry to local police.

The officer was careful.

A family member possessing a copied key created facts that needed investigation.

There would be no dramatic arrest.

But the report established that Mariana disputed consent.

Briarwood terminated Derek’s pending loan.

Not suspended.

Terminated.

Derek appeared at Mariana’s house that evening.

The new lock stopped his old key.

He pounded on the door.

“You killed my company!”

Mariana spoke through the doorbell intercom.

“No. Your financing depended on property you don't own.”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“Mom is going to lose everything.”

“I know.”

That slowed him.

“Then how can you do this?”

Mariana looked through the glass.

Because that was the trap.

If she prevented wrongdoing, she caused the consequences.

If she surrendered, she proved surrender was family duty.

“I didn't take out Mom’s loans,” she said. “I didn't put my house in your application.”

“You could fix it.”

“I could absorb it.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Derek stared through the glass.

For perhaps the first time in his life, Mariana did not convert his emergency into her responsibility.

The next morning, Mercer Restoration missed payroll.

The conflict was no longer confined to one family.
