Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE BEFORE THE VOWS

Lucille Mercer grabbed her daughter by the collar of her wedding gown and drove her backward against the vanity.
A row of perfume bottles rattled.
One toppled.
Mariana caught herself with both hands before the mirror.
“Mom—”
Lucille ripped part of the veil loose from Mariana’s hair.
“No house for Derek?” she hissed. “Then you don’t get a wedding.”
A deep-burgundy folder slid from the vanity and landed open on the cream carpet.
Mariana stared at it.
Derek bent calmly, picked it up, and placed a pen between her fingers.
“Just sign,” he said. “You married rich anyway.”
Outside the bridal suite, a string quartet was already playing.
One hundred and eighteen guests waited in the ballroom of the Hudson Valley estate.
Mariana looked from her younger brother to her mother.
Neither appeared shocked by what the other was doing.
That was when she understood this had been planned.
Lucille pointed toward the ballroom doors.
“Everything you own came from this family.”
Mariana looked down at the document.
She recognized her address immediately.
Her house in White Plains.
The home she had bought six years earlier and spent another four paying down aggressively.
The folder described Derek as having an “equitable family interest” in the property.
He had no such thing.
Then something metal caught the light beside his cuff.
A key.
Brass.
Stamped with the same locksmith code as Mariana’s back door.
She looked at him.
“You already made yourself a key?”
Derek’s smile disappeared.
Lucille reached for Mariana again.
This time Mariana stepped back.
She took the folder from Derek.
“No.”
“Mariana—”
“No.”
She walked out of the bridal suite.
Not toward the parking lot.
Toward the ceremony.
The ballroom doors opened.
Guests turned as Mariana entered alone, veil torn at one side, the burgundy folder in her hand.
Her fiancé, Ethan Cole, stood at the end of the aisle.
His expression changed when he saw her.
Mariana stopped before taking the first step.
“I’m sorry,” she said, looking at the guests. “But before I marry Ethan, my family needs to explain why they came to my wedding prepared to take my house.”
Behind her, Lucille froze.
Derek swore under his breath.
Mariana opened the folder.
And saw a lender’s name she recognized.
May you like
Not because she had borrowed money from them.
Because three days earlier, the same company had called asking whether she had authorized an inspection of her property.
